Air Tanker Crash in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Authorities say two pilots were killed when their air tanker crashed while fighting a wildfire in western Utah.
Iron County sheriff's Detective Sgt. Jody Edwards tells the Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/KDszfM) that sheriff's deputies were able to reach the plane after the Sunday afternoon crash. Edwards says they confirmed that the pilots had died. The cause of the crash is unknown.
The pilots were dropping retardant on the 5,000-acre White Rock Fire, which began burning Friday night after a lightning strike in eastern Nevada. The fire spread across the Utah line Saturday night, but most of the blaze remains in Nevada.
The Bureau of Land Management says in a statement that the P-2V tanker went down shortly before 1 p.m. The plane is owned by Neptune Aviation Services, a Missoula, Mont.-based company.

To make the day even worse, Tanker 55 (N355MA) had a gear-up landing at KMEV (Minden,NV). Thankfully the crew was fine but the plane looks pretty bad...

That's some great video! It looks like they had a stiff crosswind to negotiate as well.

Why he didn't stop both engines as soon as he landed?, that would prevent further damage to the propellers and engines.

I noticed that too Avion. Once on the ground I think a go around was improbable and I would have killed the engines, but we also don't know what was going on in the cockpit in terms of communications and planning. The starboard engine was still turning for a bit after they stopped. I think I may have also chosen to land full gear up, but they may not have had that option. Nonetheless, it was a hell of a good job of getting the airplane down and walking away.

Probably need to be careful about saying what you would or wouldn't do.

Things unfold very very fast, and sometimes it's over with before you even know what's happening...or maybe just hanging on on a seriously rough ride....

Just a few wiggle words..."I would HOPE", or "Ideally you'd want to kill the engines"

I thought I was being careful. Using the phrase "I think" doesn't denote a condemnation of or declaration of incorrect action. In fact, I said " We don't know what was going on in the cockpit in terms of communication and planning." So how much more careful should I be? Should I put on a condom before I post? What would you have done Mr. 3weer?
