This is a good question, a focus no doubt
And reward for the thought, I'll give virtual trout
But as you well know, of these there are two
Is fresh or is salt? Too easy for you!!

Alas for you Sir, to think that you would
Elicit the answer, its far, far too good!
I'll give you more clues, if find you cannot
From what you now have in the factual cook-pot

'tis something therin, that so calls to you
To rip up the box, and sideways pursue
If facts you consider and deductions you make
A more interesting way will lead you so straight

The first who sees this, will narrow the place
Where airport doth lie, and its partner for State
Because if you tread along this thought road
I will garauntee it's "all systems go!"

So here's the full answer, to your big request
I'll not merely tell, with the utmost respect
While some place great faith in knowledge and guile
It's wisdom that does what intelligence can't!

So to the conclusion of this merry verse
It merely remains for me to be terse
My friend has two trout and will give you a clue
When next he posts up, a riddle for you

The Fisherman says:

I see you are a fisherman too Brian... here, have some trout!

(Salt Water Trout)

(Fresh Water Trout)

As The Poet said, I've contracted the services of The Fisherman to provide your next challenge which will reveal another piece of information about this airport... that is, if no-one locates the airport by the time The Fisherman has caught, gutted and cooked the challenge for you.

This thing is driving me crazy, flyin boats that don't necessarily need a water runway (like the Grumman HU-16 Albatross...)...

But if there are definitely no 744s - maybe one or two 742s, but 727s and yet another sort of albatroses... Opa-Locka.

And they have quite a collection there (if that were the solution), DC-10 without the rear center engine so that you look into or better through a tunnel...

You don't have to worry about the types any more because they have served their purpose in telling you something about the airport. Check the recent replies to Peter - they hold all the information you need.

The Poet says:

But Opa-Locka
Is like Mocca Chocca

Es tut mir leid, aber Opa Locka ist den falschen Flugplatz

Peter you solicit an apology from me
The labels were faulty, as you said - both said "sea"
So for this one deed, of pointing it out
I'll reward your correctness with information of clout

I don't want anybody to waste time being curious
About information that's wrong, especially when not serious
I understand why you, have questioned this thing
It shows superb sleuth work, the best I have seen

And put, as you have, in verse eloquent
My pleasure it is, to give my consent
To grant a reward for all your tenacity...
... the State of this airport is not Mississippi!

Superb Peter

Paul

Important Amendment: the labels on the trout images (below or above depending on how you organise your threads) have been changed to what they should have been in the first place. Apologies for this "Red Herring"!.. 'twas merely a simple mistake to label them "Salt Water" and "Sea Water". Thanks to Super-Sleuth, Peter, for a very astute enquiry on that!...

... and, as you can all see, you have all been richly rewarded for his work!

I don't do Wild Goose Chasing... it wastes too much time and energy and life is too short, but if you can explain what you mean I will get The Fisherman to make the watery theme absolutely crystal clear to you and everyone else.

Ced Ampo: read your statement carefully, it implies that you know the airport is on salt water.

A) If that's what you mean, then I have one question for you:

How do you know it is on salt water?

B) If that isn't what you mean, then I have two questions for you:

How can you be 100% sure that, when you read something, it is a question?

How can you make sure that other people know when you have asked a question?

If you need a clue... check my questions here. What does every question have in common?

The Poet says:

As sure as you are you and I am me,
Into our heads no other will see
I won't chase wild geese but, if something you want
I make this request, please make clear your point
If you can tell me exactly what you mean
Ced Ampo, the answer, The Fisherman will explain

The Fisherman will explain very clearly and give you the answer... but he is confused with your post. Are you stating something or asking something?

The Fisherman says:

Following Brian's clever expedition fishing for a huge answer, you now only have 4 States to look in, not 5. Because no-one has found the airport from the information you have, here is another challenge to help you find out another major piece of information.

This post will do 2 things:

1) Clarify the information you have so far
2) Provide the next challenge

A) RECAP OF ALL THE RELEVANT INFORMATION:

So far your efforts have revealed that:

1. The airport is in one of the follwing southern US States...
....... Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana
2. The airport lies near water.
3. All of the following...

On-line data about this airport tends to be a little patchy since verifiable up to date information is a little suspect.

However, whilst there is a suggestion that the airport still has some scheduled commercial traffic, apparently ninety-nine percent or more is not commercial, of which eighty to ninety percent is General Aviation (assumed to include Biz also) after which Military and Air Taxi movements split the difference.

The Airport was constructed in the 1930s and was considered to be at the leading edge of airport design, particularly with respect to contemporary architectural excellence of the time. Personally, I don’t think the image on this thread makes this well known styling too obvious.

The airport retains its original ICAO code which alludes to the area it serves, the consequences of which ensure that the ICAO code of the current major commercial airport in this area doesn’t make an immediately obvious link to the area.

Although the current major airport does allude to its former name, when I travelled through it in 1988, on two Continental DC9-30s, it had already changed its name to the one it was subsequently given and which it retains to this day.

B) THE NEXT CHALLENGE:

This is a sequence of increasingly difficult tasks which all have something to do with another major piece of information about this airport. This will make it a lot easier for you to find the airport so the information will not be revealed too easily!

The Goose Keeper says:

Unlike every other challenge so far, I am not available to guide you away from any Wild Goose Chases on this one, so make sure you read the information and instructions very closely!

The Poet says:

I will be here
To give you good cheer
But what I won't do
Is give you a clue

So focus on facts
And wear clever hats
This challenge to unfold
So that info. be told!

Challenge, Part 1: Search and Find

Skill Level: Basic

At the time of writing I have 567 images on the JetPhotos database. The remarks on one of these photographs, taken in 2007, mentions a well known Rock Band. Find it as quickly as you can and report back:

1. Which image is it?
2. Which Rock Band is it?

The Poet says:

JP.Net provides us with all the relevant tools
to find this image quickly if you follow one simple rule.
You can look at every picture but if you want to find it quick
Use a method of different sorts to do this easy bit

Once the two questions are answerd, you will receive Part 2 of this challenge.

Happy hunting sleuths!

Paul

I don't know how to hotlink the photo, but with a simple link you might get some hits so all's not lost. I have to wonder though what a bucket-and-spade holiday charter has to do with Lynryd Skynryd.

http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.p...436084&nseq=29

From the band we can narrow the location (state) of the airport down to two options. Option one is Florida, as the band was formed in Jacksonville Florida. The second option is to go for their best known song, "Sweet home Alabama".

This, by the way, honks me of more then a bit. Thus far my search had for some reason gravitated around Houston and around New Orleans. I was completely of track.

Let's go with that...

Executive Airport in Orlando: ICAO code ORL, leaving the major airport in the area, Orlando International, with the code MCO, left from its days as an Air Force base.

ORL was built in 1928, originally named Orlando Municipal. It was used as a military field in WWII, was later named Orlando Executive, and finally just Executive Airport. It once had commercial traffic, but now primarily sees general aviation, corporate, and the occasional military traffic. I'll go out on a limb here - since Air Force One uses MCO, I'll guess that a C-5 (Galaxy) has used ORL to deliver support equipment a time or two.

Or am I totally out to lunch?

If "constructed in the 1930s" = "built in 1928" then I'm out to lunch

But I have to say... nice work otherwise!

The Poet says:

Alas poor Moose, just another goose

The Fisherman says:

Your fishing has been pretty good sleuths and, because Peter has articulated the second part of the challenge - making the link between the Band and the States, you bypass the intermediate Part 2 and go straight to Part 3. While that might seem a good thing, it is not necessarily so!

The final part to this challenge will be posted up shortly and will give you the information when it is solved. You will need good skills to solve it!

The Fisherman says:

I have worked very hard to catch, gut and cook this fish for you. It is not a 'Red Herring'. On the contrary, it is as valuable as the most rarest finned creature you could ever hope to find!

Your Task

Solve the anagram by rearranging the letters of the phrase below into a new sentence which you must post up to progress further

Your anagram is: OBAMA WASTES THE POOR MAIL TRAIN THESIS

Your Only Clue

Peter has noticed that there are links between Lynrd Skynrd and the US States you have been searching. The anagram also links these themes.

The Only Advice You Will Be Given

Read my instructions carefully, stick to facts.

The Poet says:

See you later, Alligator
In a while, Crocodile
Good luck, Rubber Duck!
Please, please, chase no geese!

Paul

I have a feeling I might have it.........

????? Lynrd Skynrd...

"Sweet home Alabama"

B727's. (history here of 727's arriving for scrap, use as a restaurant)

Albatross. (there's one in the museum)

Galaxy. (Pres. Bush came here during Hurricane Katrina so a Galaxy likely followed with presidential paraphernalia.)

Goshawk. (would imagine one has probably visited given the military presence......

ICAO indicator defines the airfield.....

...and the anagram = SO ISN'T THIS SWEET HOME ALABAMA AIRPORT.

Sooooo.......

....and being at work I don't have GoogleEarth to check an image.....

but...

I think......

It's......

Mobile, Alabama (MOB) ?

What am I doin' up at this time o' night? ... answering your post Brian since you have put suuch a lot of work into it.

As with Moose's post, I am full of praise for you sleuths.

But, again, as with Moose's post, I'm afraid 'tis more a mobility problem than Mobile

The Poet says:

Alas poor Brian, the fish he ain't fryin'

Go for the anagram

Paul

(Interstingly, one of the CO DC9-30s I mentioned was "City of Mobile"... that's not a clue! )

The Poet says:

Brian you star, you've done what was needed
Even though my clear instruction was often not heeded
You've found this jazzy place even through much Goose Chasing
And now we know that winning, is not about "racing"
There's been so much of that so I'll give all the cure
When all that you know doesn't fit with the clue
Don't look for what you want because that's what you'd have
In not going your way, you sure found Lakefront!

Ladies, Gentlemen, boys and girls, poets and sleuths, onlookers and world wide web:

May I be the first to congratulate Brian in arriving at the answer, but may I also congratulate you all for your collective team effort.

When I saw the desire that this thread should have "some life" breathed into it, I guess I couldn't turn down the opportunity to do something about that once I had the yoke. I hope you've enjoyed musing over the clues, poems, instructions etc. as much as I have and, especially, that you have enjoyed researching this airport from different angles which requires different strategies and skills rather than just relying on Google Earth, JP.Net, "the other site" and what we know as 'aviation buffs'.

I have certainly learnt a great deal in the process and, if you have too, it follows that we are all winners!

So, it only remains for me, The Poet, The Goosekeeper and The Fisherman, to hand over the aircraft to Brian for the next installment and congratulate him once more for being the cherry on the JP.Detect cake...

WELL DONE BRIAN!

Brian Whitesleuth... you have control!

Paul

PS - no-one's cracked "All New Name That Aircraft" yet... I sense that The Poet might be musing over a clue
