Payscales
When you are working for particular airline, and you change type or get promoted to Captain, do you start on the pay scale with the number of years youve been working for that airline, or do you start at the bottom?

it really depends on the airline. Different airlines operate a different way. In the US in general you get paid for the aircraft type you fly, and whether you fly domestic or international, and your rank.
In my airline you are paid the same regardless of what type you fly (Unless you fly cargo in which case it is a different contract altogether). We only fly widebodies so on the passenger side of things no type is considered better or worse and therefore pay is the same. You are paid according to rank, and your seniority in years within that rank. When you are promoted, you move up on the pay scale.

Most companies in the US pay by seat, aircraft type, and longevity. All three are a factor in your paystub.
If you've been with the company as an FO for three years, then upgrade to captain, you are paid year three CA pay. I think that's what you're asking anyway.

I am Hong Kong based. We only have one basing for the 777s since we are a regional fleet (for the time being). We have Airbus and 747 basings available in the US but as I am not a US citizen and do not have a green card I would not be eligible anyway....not that the thought has ever crossed my mind. I was born and grew up in HK so basings at the moment do not interest me.

I thought you might have been from the US. Never mind. Im thinking of flying for a major HK-based carrier with a base in the US.
