  • Airline puts passengers in military barracks during unexpected layover

A London-bound United Airlines flight from Chicago made an unexpected stop Friday night, providing some passengers with the layover from hell.

According to data from the website FlightAware.com, United 958 pulled a U-turn about three hours into the 7.5 hour flight moments after it began to cross the Atlantic Ocean beyond eastern edges of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

"The captain came on and basically just said there were some lights on in the cockpit and that there was some vibrations that passengers in the back of the plane were feeling," passenger Lois Harper told CNN.

    ...

"Life in Goose Bay Army Base, living the dream thanks United Airlines," passenger Erica Keogan sarcastically lamented on Twitter.

Perhaps the passangers may have preferred a whisky on the rocks with ice from the glaciar were they would have crash landed in the middle of Greenland after continuing the flight with SEVERE PROBLEMS WITH THE ELEVATOR AND RUDDER!!!

This is an emergency diversion point intended to save lives, what it did, not to receive a plane load of turists and businessmen in comfort.

This is like complaining because the life raft where you sheltered after the ship sunk lacked a private toilet.

A better analogy would be complaining in a life raft because no crew from the ship were present and you were left to drift for 20 hours despite being a couple hours from shore. I don't think the issue here is about the pilots' need to divert; it's about the company's indifference in dealing with the situation. A sad day for United Airlines and another lesson about allowing mega-mergers to remove competition.

There are much more primitive places to land in that part of the world.

What not mentioned if there were Canadian customs officials available to process passengers.

What do mean by 'indifference to the situation'?

What exactly do you want United to do?

The passengers were provided with safe housing and meals and flown out at the first available opportunity.

These are not 'oh lets divert there for fun' airports, they're 'lets divert there to keep everyone alive, even if they don't have a great time there'.

            - Get a replacement aircraft up there in far less than 20 hours. Within 10 actually.

            - Get customer service people up there in the meantime to handle things like a lack of heat and/or blankets, to coordinate the accommodations and to keep everyone apprised.

            - Have a contigency plan in effect ahead of time.

As I said, I have no qualms with the crew or the diversion.

Hey, United is great. Didn't you read, they now assure that they have a consistent policy on who gets unopened beverages. Being able to get a replacement plane in under 10 hours is so trivial compared to that!

Apparently United was having bigger problems that day. This was posted from 'Anonymous' on AvHerald (no idea on the veracity of the info):
In response to why it took United so long to fly in a replacement aircraft: They flew in UA 2176 from Newark for Goose Bay nearly five hours late due to its own “aircraft maintenance” issue. Then another long wait before departing for EWR due to "congestion issues" there. Incidentally UA 925 diverts to Goose Bay that same Saturday while on its way from London to Washington Dulles for its own mechanical issues making a grand total of 3 UA aircraft on the ground in Goose Bay.
                Untied Airlines..?
