  • Air safety issue in your yob...

Are you able to remember one air safety event in your year of birth?

Even for me, it is not that simple. But there is one, which is less than 12 months older than me:

Los Rodeos. 747 vs 747. This is the reason why I own the nickname that I own. 747 is a safe a/c. This is one of the very few exceptions:

    March 27th, 1977, a KL-B742 competed against a PA Clipper 741, who is able to t/o first?!
Los Rodeos on that day was the main alternate for, let me guess, almost all (!) short, medium- and longhaul-jets with destination Gran Canaria or Tenerife.
And misty conditions ruled at GCXO in the spring of 1977...

The rest is evil, and well known by all aviation enthusiasts in Europe...

PS: There, indeed is a fatal accident which took place in my yob, but without relation to aviation. Los Alfaques (July 1978_).

Conclusion 1: Highway traffic is not safe, not safer than aviation.

Conclusion 2: Since 37 years, the connection between the Iberian penninsula and the rest of Europe seems to be quite strong...

This one happened in your yob? Oh man, I am really gettin old.

      Compared to Los Rodeos (583 ✝) , and even compared to 4U 9525, ....

.... which I'll never forget in my whole life, the Silk Air flight ended with only a few fatalities... if one can say that. But that was not the question. 1 dead passenger is 1 dead passenger too much.

      Thank You for your contribution!

Btw, US Eastcoast, this is not your dinner, no?

We should underline, that UA and LH sucessfully operate 747s.

According to something I read in Flying magazine, in the early 1960's the airline fatality rate was higher than the light plane fatality rate.

Some of this may be explained by light planes tending to fly for fun in good weather, while commercial planes being "forced" to keep a schedule, and genuinely taking on weather (AND back then there were a fair number of poorer performing planes that flew IN weather instead of OVER it).

Ten days before I was born ......

The Superga air disaster took place on Wednesday 4 May 1949 when a plane carrying the entire Torino A.C. football team (popularly known as Il Grande Torino) crashed into Superga Hill near Turin, killing all 31 people aboard. 18 players, club officials, journalists accompanying the team and the plane's crew were lost. The team was returning from a farewell match for Xico Ferreira against Benfica in Lisbon.

Accident description from Aviation Safety Network’s
          Quote:
          Date: Wednesday 4 May 1949
          Time: ca 17:05
          Type: Fiat G.212CP
Operator: Avio Linee Italiane - ALI
          Registration: I-ELCE
          C/n / msn: 05
          First flight: 1947
          Crew: Fatalities: 4 / Occupants: 4
          Passengers: Fatalities: 27 / Occupants: 27
          Total: Fatalities: 31 / Occupants: 31
          Airplane damage: Written off
Airplane fate: Written off (damaged beyond repair)
Location: 12 km (7.5 mls) E of Torino-Aeritalia Airport (Italy)
          Phase: Approach (APR)
          Nature: Int'l Non Scheduled Passenger
Departure airport: Barcelona Airport (BCN/LEBL), Spain
Destination airport: Torino-Aeritalia Airport (LIMA), Italy

          Narrative:
The plane was taking home the Turin soccer team after a match in Lisbon. The Fiat plane took off at 09:52 and made a refueling stop at Barcelona at 13:15. Weather in the Turin area was bad; visibility at the airport was 1200m with a cloud base at 400m. In the area of the 675m high Superga Hill, visibility was just 40m. The crew reported over Savona at 2000m. They were then forced to descend to be able to fly visually. While descending for Turin the aircraft crashed into a church on top of Superga Hill.
Eighteen players, 3 executives, 2 trainers, 3 journalists and an interpreter died in the crash. The causes were bad weather with low clouds, poor radio aids and an error in navigation.
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

I would have to claim the United DC-8, in route to JFK + TWA Super Connie in route to LaGuardia mid air collision in December 1960.

There's some ironing that we recently had a thread here on ADS-B, as well as a Flim Flam Flarm or something traffic separation system.

It must have been one of those bizarre chain-reaction events...

Interesting. I grew up in Michigan which has the Selfridge air base. I never knew (or looked into) the history of the name. It is named after that guy.

Side note: SR-71s used to fly out of that base as well.
