  • BA A319 Emergency Landing at LHR

Just seen on the news that a BA A319 had to make an emergency landing at LHR, not much on it yet but there is a video of it flying overhead with a hell of a load of smoke pouring out of an engine!

A bird strike during take off was reported and the plane made an emergency on the north rwy. All passengers were evacuated safely.

Glad all are off and are fine; I was on that plane , G-EUOE only a month ago coming back from Rome! Hard to think that weeks later that it would be like this, just fortunate that it didn't lose both engines. Here it is when I was actually on G-EUOE at Rome http://www.flickr.com/photos/agosto66/8658576408/ quite a co incidence that was. The seat which I sat in 7th window from the back, where I was filming actually, would've had fire visible!

Seems like the runway is reopened.

I don't get it. Clearly the #2 engine is the one with the smoke coming out the back and the charred paintwork, but the video/pics from inside the aircraft show the cover on the #1 engine open in flight too, and on the ground they are both open.

From what I've seen on the internet it may be that the first the left cowls detached and then the right cowls. Apparently the right cowl detaching may have damaged a fuel line on the right engine causing a fire. Due to there being no cowling now the fire may not have worked meaning smoke was coming out the back. Some people are suggesting that the fan cowls weren't secured correctly. It's rather ironic that I said on my flight with this aircraft on landing, that even despite a hard touchdown, it doesn't matter as long you come down on the runway!

              Interesting day!

It's been an interesting day for British aviation!

First of all, the emergency landing of G-EUOE, as discussed above.

Then, we have the PIA 77W diverted to STN with a fighter escort (AP-BID)

LN 705. AP-BID. Boeing 777-340ER. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

Now, an AA 777 has returned to LHR due to a technical fault. (AA 107).

                WOW!

It seems that they were quite close from a double engine failure

... was climbing out of Heathrow's runway 27L when a loud bang from the left hand engine was heard and the left hand engine's (V2522) cowling doors went missing. The crew levelled off at 6000 feet reassuring passengers. While positioning for a return to Heathrow another loud bang was heard, this time from the right hand engine, and the right hand engine's cowling doors went missing, and the right hand engine was trailing smoke.

Interim report from the AAIB says that both engine fan cowl doors had been left unlatched (and unchecked, contrary to procedure).

Doors broke off during takeoff, punctured right hand engine fuel pipe causing an engine fire, while left engine was doorless but operating. Also damaged hydraulics, tyres and landing gear.

The doors on both engines of the flight that made an emergency landing at Heathrow last week were left unlatched, investigators reveal.

So not birds after all. And if both engines had been damaged during takeoff that could have been catastrophic.

Second place in a bum kicking contest looks to be inevitable then ?
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

This is exactly what most suspected as the cause. Apparently it's pretty hard to see the unlatched cowl doors on these engines, but not following the procedures is inexcusable.
