  • Orient Thai plane nearly hit Tokyo Tower on Sep 19

Newspaper in Japan reported yesterday that an Orient Thai charter plane deviated from flight path when landing at Tokyo Haneda on Sep 19. It flew as low as 540m over the city (height of Tokyo Tower is 330m) when making the final approach (Normally, final approach to HND are made on Tokyo Bay from the east or from the south. Planes landing at HND should not be flying over the city, which is northeast of the airport). The plane was empty with no passengers when the incident occured. The pilot has been suspended.

The report did not specify what type of plane it is, but I guess it would be a 747.

planes landing at HND do come in over the city, espeically those using 04 which requires a sharp left turn similar to old Kai Tak

    next trips
    USA/DXB August.

The plane in question was a 747-200 series.

Normally the planes do a U-turn over the industrial area near Haneda but this one came over the city and did the u-turn near Tokyo tower coming within 200 metres of the tower. Since it was after midnight, the floodlights on the tower would have been turned off so they probably didn't even see the tower except for the marker lights.

This plane overflew my apartment which is not near a flight path and it made all the windows rattle as it was so low.
