  • Iran Air gets two new B747-200's!!!

Looks like the two new B747-200's for Iran Air are bought from Imperial Hellenic Airways. They are now stored at Tehran-Mehrabad (THR) and are doing checks by the company "Farsko" (فارسکو). In some days they will be painted. More info to come.

Are there any potential issues with sanctions regarding these aircraft (considering their age, and method of procurement)?

What exactly are the stipulations regarding the sanctions against Iran and importation of aircraft?
Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

The aircraft are not new, they are new for Iran Air.

They are not allowed to fly over EU, so they won't be used on European routes for sure. These aircraft will be used to Middle East/Asian routes.
New aicraft means new routes/increased frequency, it will be interesting to know if there will be some new routes etc....

I don't really get how they can sometimes get around the Sanctions - but not always.

There are plenty of A340's on the market, better Aircraft than these by a long way, also much newer and with way less rotations. And they're pretty cheap compared to their original retail price. So why are they stuffing around with such old 747-200's?

Perhaps because they have the training and operational systems and infrastructure in place for 747s. The Iranians have been flying 747s for over 40 years and presumably know more about them than most people.

To add, they have kept some of their 747s up and running by almost completely refitting/replenishing them with locally made parts. Impressive, by any stretch of the imagination, especially so when considering that it's Iran.
