An Air Algerie flight crashed on Thursday en route from Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers with 110 passengers on board, an Algerian aviation official said.

Some confusion as to the type of plane it was!

Flightradar has it as an MD83 EC-LTV.

BBC are reporting the pilot contacted ATC to change course to avoid a storm

Also, an unnamed official is quoted as saying that the crew were asked to change course to avoid weather and to prevent risk of collision with another aircraft.

            Those two seem contradictory..

An Argentine newspaper reports that Algeria authorities officially confirmed that it crashed in the Sahel dessert.

              In Spanish:
Lo indican fuentes oficiales argelinas. Habría caído en una zona de Níger. Llevaba 116 personas a bordo. Una fuerte tormenta y poca visibilidad afectaban al vuelo en el momento de su desaparición.

                Aircraft Type

Its surely a MD 83 that was leased from Swift Air that performed the Flight.

The misleading info comes because Air Algerie normally uses a B737-600 or an Airbus from their own fleet for this Flight. So in all Scedules and even on the Flightinfo of start and landing airport 737-600 is listed as used Equippment.

Twenty minutes ago, the Ouagadougou airport website announced that French forces from Mali (presumably the two figher acft sent on search) have discoverd the wreck of AH5017, halfway betwen Gao and Kidal in an inaccessible desert area.

Several reports claim that the wreckage was discovered and no one survived.

The ill-fated MD-83 was delivered to Heliopolis Airline in 1996. In later years, Avianca and Austral also used this aircraft before Swiftair added this MD-83 to their fleet.

The wreckage has been reached by French soldiers. No survivors. The aircraft seems to have struck the ground intact. A high-altitude stall? Convectively elevated Ice crystals come to mind...

....or engines full of sand ? Remember...the pilot had supposedly asked for a route change to avoid a sandstorm.

I can remember sitting out in the desert in Saudi Arabia when I worked there having a party with friends in beautiful weather with no hint of anything untoward when, within one or two minutes, we were hit by a huge sandstorm that forced us into shelter in our vehicles and took some of the paint off of some of them. One 4WD Chevy that was parked side on to the storm was turned on its side. I don't think I've ever experienced such weather violence before or since.
