    Ok, here it is, hiding in plain sight...

    As the scale goes to 15,000ft, perhaps the pilot thought 18,000ft would get it down by 5000ft, either due to mental confusion or GA lack of understanding.

      Since the warning would start as soon as this indication (cabin altitude) exceeds 10000ft, mental confusion should not be a factor initially (not at least hypoxia-borne).
