  • Go around or not?

Some of you may have seen this making the rounds on the web the last few days, a hairy (to say the least) recent landing at Funchal. The public seem to think this pilot "saved the day" and showed great skill, and while on one hand the recovery was skillful, it seems obvious that a go around was the only sensible course of action here:

For comparison we have two other videos on the same day:

Monarch not having any of that (correct course of action)
Dia de muito vendo, tentativa de aterragem falhada.. Monarch LPMA 20-10-2014

Transavia 738, approach remains stable, continues with landing
Madeira Airport (Airport), atxhd, funchal, Transavia.com (Airline), transavia, good landing in windy day, GOOD, LANDING, WINDY, DAY, BAD, FLY

I've seen worse and no go-around. Who are we to judge, we weren't on the flight deck. They pulled it together, and everyone walked away. It was their call. People are too quick to judge.

Either that or "people" ran out of pertinent things to say about Cargolux takeoff exploits, so a landing discussion seemed logical.

clearly, this is a prime example of how boeing metal beats cheap airbus composites. oh, and boeing pilots are just plain better!

May I refer you to that well known B757 pilot Bruce Dickinson and this video.....

                        Hmmm.....

Pretty much nailed the 1000-ft markers with the striped line between the main gear, plane pointed straight ahead.

The landing doesn't hit me as spectacular as what must have been a somewhat strong, potentially downward, possibly speed killing drop where he's cranking the wing AND pulling up- but the plane keeps dropping...

                        Then it does settle down.

I would also bring up one of those "first few things" you are taught regarding crosswinds...

...when you are out there on final and there appears to be a blistering crosswind that you're scared you can't handle, it's very likely it will slow down when you get close to the ground.

...kinda what happened here, the final final final stages there looked like "a good, old-fashioned crosswind."
Les règles de l'aviation de base découragent de longues périodes de dur tirer vers le haut.

Funchal has an elevated runway, recently extended on stilts which drops off at both ends into the ocean. It is famous for downdraughts / wind shear at the downwind end of the runway which is what looks like is happening here.
With no ILS, winds that have a mind of their own, no runway overrun areas and a sodding great mountain at one side of the runway it is 9th on the list of the 12 most dangerous airports in the world.

And yet, not a single fatal accident on that extended runway. Just goes to show you what happens when pilots HAVE to be on top of their game.

Where does this one fall on the list?

Mandatory hand-flown visual-only 'slither-to-land' approach to a 6500' runway. Just ignore the GWPS.

Check out the minimum altitudes on the Jeppesen chart on that video. MDA is 12,500'. You are landing at 7,300'.

And in an A320. Who says you can't fly right with a sidestick?

Wikipedia says 181,659 pax used the airport in 2012. I can't find a single accident report. Maybe it's because only eight pilots and one airline are certified to land there. I guess, as pilots go, Druk air is the gold standard.

I must put this on my bucket list!
