  • Turkish Airlines plane skids off runway at Kathmandu, Nepal

A Turkish Airlines plane has crashed after overshooting the runway as it tried to land in dense fog at an airport in Nepal.
The Airbus A330's front landing gear collapsed and the plane nose-dived on the runway at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
No passengers on the flight, THY726, were seriously hurt in the incident but some were given medical attention after evacuation.
The plane on a seven-hour flight circled for half hour over Nepal before it made a second attempt to land. The runway was slippery after two days of rain and there was dense fog at the time.
Airport officials said the plane with 238 people on board was coming from Istanbul on Wednesday when the accident happened.

Continued with the runway in sight? I doubt it.
Nepal's Civil Aviation Authority reported one of the wheels had touched down off the runway, the tyre burst, the aircraft subsequently veered left.
I wonder what their fuel situation was...

You're thinking of the *real* runway. The imaginary runway in the pilots' heads was clearly visible.

Joking aside, looking at the video that fog's so thick I'd have second thoughts about getting on the *bus*!

He had to be on fumes to make a go at that one. Where is the nearest other airport that could take him?

Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (VILK) is probably closest at a bit over 400km distant. Don't know if they can deal with a widebody but they were in the process of expanding facilities to do so. Nice 9,186ft slab there.

EDIT: Varanasi is closer, about 350km with a 9000ft runway. In a pinch there would also be Gorahkpur military base at about 200km.

I think Tribhuvan is a new route for Turkish.

I'm not sure if this comment was a serious one or joke/sarcasm.

Just a regular ILS wouldn't do with fog like that clearly well below CAT II minimums.

The flight came in from Istanbul, not Constantinople.
