  • Turkish Airlines To Buy 70 Boeing 737s By 2021

Turkish Airlines has committed to buying 70 Boeing 737s worth USD$6.9 billion at list prices, just weeks after placing a large order with Airbus.

The fast-growing airline, which is pursuing an aggressive growth strategy as it targets a larger share of the global aviation market, on Tuesday announced 70 firm orders and options to buy a further 25 aircraft from Boeing between 2016-2021.

Boeing said Turkey's national carrier had committed to ordering 40 737 MAX 8s, 10 737 MAX 9s and 20 737-800 aircraft, with an option for an additional 25 737 MAX 8s.

On March 15, Turkish Airlines said it would buy 117 narrow-body planes from Airbus.

That order consisted of 25 A321-200s, four A320 neo, 53 A321 neo and an option for a further 35 A321 neo.

The airline carried 39 million passengers last year and expects to reach 46 million this year, growing to 90 million by the end of 2020, it said.

It wants to generate annual sales of USD$18 billion within seven years. It posted sales of nearly USD$8 billion last year.

not that i know much about this stuff, but how does ordering a bunch a short haul narrow bodies figure into a plan to "target a larger share of the global aviation market?"

Narrow bodies will take you round much of the world these days. For Turkish, all of Europe and the Middle East, plus much of Africa and Asia out to India, all areas where this airline is aggressively expanding.

We also forget that at one time the world had only narrow body airliners.

You think the back of a 747 or 777 is not cattle class ? It's worse, if anything.

i'm not saying there is more seating space in any sardine can lately, since they all suck monkey ass as a result of mismanagement and gross corporate greed. but there is a huge difference in space that does make a difference.

I know of one regular flight of 2900NM in the 37.
With that range, taking off from Istanbul you can reach 100% of Europe, Iceland and even Greenland. To the North you can reach all the European Russia and a good part of the Asian Russia too. To the South, about 2/3 of Africa (unfortunately South Africa is out of range). And to the East all the Middle East, part of India (including New Deli) and the Western part of China (that maybe is not a great destination).
