May those lost Rest In Peace.

I read a comment in the link where someone says that they would never fly in an F27. It is indeed a worrying statistic that, of 526 Friendships built, 172 have been destroyed in crashes. ONE THIRD of the total production !
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

Maybe a bad number but this is in a time span of almost 50 years of operations with the F27. And also in not the best operational area's to fly.

And not all of those 172 really crashed. Many were write off's after minor incidents.

In isolation that 172 number is utterly without meaning and context. As the previous writer says, review all the circumstances of the hull losses. In any case, the majority of losses have been in either cargo operations or dubious third world countries or regulatory contexts, or both. In western aiine service, in its day, it was a perfectly safe airliner. It first entered service 56/57 years ago. You also have to consider the Fairchild built airframes, and the later Fokker 50 airframes.
