  • Screeners, what is going on?

Just curious, what is going on with the screening process.
We are now up to 18 days before screening take place.
10 - 12 days as it has been sometime ago is nice but now it's only getting longer and longer!

What is the explanation guys? (or have I missed something).

The simple facts are that we are getting more and more uploads especially now that the weather in Europe is improving.
We accept approximately 69% of our uploads so it follows that the 31% that we reject take up 31% of our time unproductively. If photographers were more selective by not uploading the images that get rejected we could knock 6 days off the screening time bringing it back to around 10 -12 days queue time.
We do intend to take on more screeners in the near future but uploaders will have to then accept some initial inconsistencies in screening until the new screeners find their feet.
If it 'ain't broken........ Don't try to mend it !

Brian, lately the number of pics that are screened daily, is much less then it was before. Also it seems to me that the number of pics which are send in to be screened is less then before. Of course it should be so that you screeners have a better view on that then I have, but it is what I think what's going on.

And yes, if there is a lack of screeners these situation will go on.
And since (I think) Jetphotos is much more critical in screening then let's say two years ago it is not that strange that there is more then 30% rejection.

But it is not that I want to complain, because I realize that it is all done in the spare free time of the screeners.

I will force myself to be patience!

        Regards.

We had some server down times in the last 2 weeks. A server up-grade is in the works though.

Apart from that it is plain wrong that it has become harder to get photos accepted. In the last 10 years the average acceptance ration has gone up from around 60% to nearly 70%.

Well, to be honest the overall quality has also gone up. If you take a 2003 digital camera and take a photo with it today and want to up-load it, this will not be easy.

Of course that is correct, also the photo editing programs are improving constantly, which means that the possibility to increase quality of the pics are there. I myself (and also my son) lately went over from version 3.0 to version 5.0 of Silkypix. Much better results up till now.

Yeah, the screening process is longer than ever. I have two pics in the queue that should be screened tomorrow, that will make it 20 days in the queue!
My question is; is there anything we can do to help? Take on more screeners perhaps, even if in "training mode" or something like that?
I was thnking something along the lines of taking people in that can do a pre screen so to speak, without being able to accept or reject, but that could see the pictures and quickly pass the clearly rejectable ones to a head screener or something so they can quickly be rejected. That could help screeners take more time on the borderline ones without having to deal with the "easy ones". Maybe Im just talking nonsense?
Anyway, if you need any help ..

                  cheers

Admittedly things have been moving slowly on the screening front at the moment as a lot of the screeners are quite busy outside of JP. We understand the frustration that you guys have regarding longer queue times, so we appreciate any ideas put forward by members that may help.

I'm sure at some point this year, we'll look for more screeners. Whenever a screener joins, they can only vote on the outcome of an image. e.g. they can only vote to accept or vote to reject, which is almost what you are suggesting Alberto.

The only problem with new screeners is that 50% of the time, after having seen behind the scenes and done a bit of screening, they decide the job is not for them and disappear. We really require commitment from new screeners.

We are currently preparing to up-grade the servers, once this is done we will address the next issue. (screening time)

Let's think positively, and focus on the 50% that will remain lol
I'm sure that among the many jp contributors there are several potential new screeners that will stick to the job, at least for some time.
I screen on another site (it's from Spain, pretty big among the spanish sepaking community) and even though we have a much lower amount of uploads, I know that it takes time, lots of it sometimes, but no screener that has been added has left. Each one screens when they can and we have managed to keep a screening time of about 1 week average. I'm confident that at jp the same can be achieved (maybe bot a week, but around 10 days? )as many would love to be a part of the team!

btw, when was it last year that for a few days the screening time took no longer than 5 minutes? How did you manage to do that? It was like spotting porn for uploaders

I remember that! Those days of around Christmas 2012 to New Years 2013. I remember uploading a photo to the queue and then trying to view it, only to find out that the page didn't exist because the photo had already been screened!!

That all happened because most of the screeners were on their Christmas holidays and decided to put in a HUGE amount of their free time to screening.
