Default DL to Shutdown Comair Operations

Delta Air Lines' Pressroom Statement
http://news.delta.com/index.php?s=43&item=1676

Operations will cease Sept 29, 2012. Seemed somewhat inevitable with its large 50-seat fleet and current financial situation. Apparently CVG will not be affected by this move, we'll see. So long Comair.

What's Comair's employee relationship like with Delta (Mainline)? Are Comair employees considered Delta employees? The reason I ask, is with the closure of Comair, what will happen to all of the jobs?

Turboprops run from small cities.

RJ's come along.

Use RJ's / regional's (and really cheap flight crews) to start doing your mainline service.

Tell customers you are offering them better flight freqencies.

Squeeze your mainline crews, reduce benefits, lay off large numbers, reduce average pay.

Dump regional company, return routes to "big iron" and cheaper flight crews.

Watch stock go up, give upper 1% executives huge bonuses.

Comair currently flies only about 1% of the flights so there wont be much, if any disruption when they are gone.

Their employees are not considered mainline employees so they will be considered new hires if they bid on positions within Delta, but if the transistion is like it was when Delta assumed ramp and gate positions at ATL from ASA, their employees were hired by Delta and did not loose all of their seniority.

Also, with the creation of Regional Elite Airline Services a few year ago the only employees left are basically the pilots, f/a's, maintanence and corporate type jobs. The ramp and airport cust svc folks are still under REAS and not directly affected.

This is a surprisingly accurate summation of the whole process.

From the Article...

"Delta spokeswoman Kristin Baur said 702 of Comair's local employees live in Northern Kentucky; 329 reside in Ohio. Company-wide, 816 pilots, 450 flight attendants and 225 mechanics stand to lose their jobs at Comair."

"The Chamber will help Comair's displaced workers find employment, Stevens said. The Chamber plans to put Comair's employees in touch with a network of several hundred human resource professionals from companies throughout the region. The Chamber also will likely host a job fair for Comair employees. Employers need skilled labor, such as machinists, Stevens said."

"It's unclear whether Delta's other partner regional airlines would hire any of the Comair pilots, Cook said. Comair employees will be considered for current and future openings at Delta, Baur said. She added that Delta expects its Delta Connection partners to consider Comair employees when openings are available."

Hopefully all can find a job elsewhere in other DL Connection partners.
