  • Flaps? Check. Rudder? Check. Blood test? Check.

Lufthansa is considering "random medical checks" for pilots.

Germany's Lufthansa considers random medical checks on pilots, to help prevent any future disaster like the Germanwings crash.

And if there were a urine/blood/whatever test for suicidal tendencies, that might even make sense!

Testing would be for the presence of medications related to mental health issues. It would either prevent pilots with undisclosed mental health issues from flying or prevent pilots with undisclosed mental health issues from taking their medications.

        Cool...

So they catch and fire some pilots (who though disturbed, would not crash a plane intentionally nor unintentionally) and the next time someone tricks the system or slips through randomly and intentionally CFIT, the PR department can say, "We really tried".

Anti-malarials and SSRI's do have a documented history of causing suicidal behaviours in a small percentage of those that take them.

Tracking the use of these medications -- the fact that anti-malarials are probably prescribed for pilots is a different problem -- may prevent issues.

WRT to SSRI's there is some data to suggest changes in dosage or drug can trigger events like that.
