This story has been around for ages. It often appears with the warship being a battleship or aircraft carrier.
There is a variant as well with one U.S. ship vs. another.
******************
A U.S. destroyer is steaming along the Vietnamese coast at night, watching for anything out of the ordinary. For some reason, the Officer of the Deck didn't know that another U.S. warship was in the area.
The destroyer gains a very large radar contact, and the fun begins.
(destroyer on the radio)
Vessel bearing ***, please identify yourself.
(silence)
(destroyer on the radio)
Vessel bearing ***, identify yourself!
(silence)
Vessel bearing ***, identify yourself, or we will open fire.
a lengthy pause
This is the U.S.S. New Jersey....fire at will!
*************
Of course the U.S.S. New Jersey is one of the Iowa class battleships.

There may be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no chance of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves.” -Sir Winston Churchill
