In 1958, I was hired to assist the Unsatisfactory Reports Division of Tinker ARB (0k) engine overhaul facility. It seems that B-52 and B-47 aircraft were experiencing a rash of uncontained engine failures. When one engine failed, the vibration would cause the TWO brittle bolts, also called Fused Bolts, to separate and drop the failed engine free of the aircraft, even if housed in a double engine pod. This usually allowed the aircraft to continue flying without difficulty due to quick disconnect valves and connections. However, some uncontained engine failures ejected parts that would damage an adjacent engine and two engines would fail in a short time, often leading to fatal crashes.
Early in 2017, a B-52 experienced an engine failure and ejected the engine without further problems. The Air Force Spokesman said to reporters, "This was a one-off incident." Funny, since I spent some time, starting in 1958, investigating many missing engine events per year. However, the military does not report to the FAA so the public does not often learn of how many engines fail per year, unless the failures are obviously public.

Do you know for a fact that this latest incident was an uncontained engine failure? (other than the whole engine being uncontained from the airplane, I mean)
