  • Russian firefighting plane disappears in Siberia

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's Emergencies Ministry says one of its firefighting planes with a crew of 10 is missing in Siberia.
The ministry said the Il-76 plane disappeared Friday while on a mission to fight forest fires in the Irkutsk region. It said that seven aircraft have been searching for the plane, which went missing in the Bayandayevsky district near Lake Baikal.
Officials said the crew hadn't reported any problems before disappearing.

Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov said the search was complicated by heavy smoke from forest fires.

The plane that disappeared is a firefighting version of the Il-76 four-engined heavy transport plane, capable of carrying 42,000 liters (11,000 gallons) of water.

Contact was lost with a Russian IL-76 fighting a blaze near the city of Irkutsk when it was at an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,900ft). The emergencies ministry plans to parachute in 100 rescue workers to search for the missing plane and the 10 people on board.
“Contact was lost in the Kachug area of the Irkutsk Region, where smoke from forest fires was extremely thick,” RIA Novosti reports, citing a source within the emergencies ministry.
According to the local administration, the search is being conducted by planes because the territory is too large and inaccessible for a ground search and there are no roads in the area.
“The crew of the aircraft has extensive experience in firefighting, delivering humanitarian aid, and rescue operations,” a source told TASS news agency.
8 aircraft are involved in rescue op, says emergencies ministry press service.

Anyone know why these need a crew of 10? 2 pilots, a couple of navigators/spotters etc to direct the plane towards the fires and release the water... I'd have thought that when undertaking a very risky job such as this - with smoke, updrafts, low altitude etc - you'd risk as few people as possible?

I'm guessing the IL-76 is filled on the ground, it doesn't scoop water in flight?

You are right. It's filled on the ground. There was also Be-200 at work, they can take water from lake in flight.

      Crew missed:

      1. Fillin (Captain)

      2. Lebedev (2 Officer)

      3. Petrov (Navigator)

      4. Kuznetsov (Flight engineer)

      5. Murachin (Radio operator)

6-8. Makarov Suslov Hadaev (Eqiupment operators)

      9-10. Jdanov Mashinov (Flight technician)

Today in the early morning (02:00AM MSK) Mi-8 on the route to the new spot of forest fire with ground firefighters crew onboard spotted crash place. Plane destroyed, nobody survived. Bodies and flight recorder reported found. Presumably, plane catches hot air into engines at climb after waterbombing and failed to avoid trees at the hill slope (900m, +225m from valley level).

IRKUTSK, July 3. /TASS/. Rescuers have found body fragments of the crew and one flight recorder at the Il-76 crash site in Irkutsk region, the rescuers told TASS on Sunday.

"During the search at the crash site in the Irkutsk region, the rescuers found body fragments of the victims and one of the two flight recorders," the source said.

          The search is under way.

"Judging from the scale of crash, all the ten people of the crew have died," the source said.

For the moment rescuers have found four bodies.

Earlier on Sunday, reports said rescuers found the missing fire-fighting Il-76 plane four kilometers south of the Rybny Yan settlement on the slope of a hill.

On July1, the Il-76 plane did not go on the air for a radio contact at a due time. The communication was lost as the plane was at the height of 3,000 meters. The plane was equipped with an airborne spray tank for fighting wildfires in the Irkutsk region. On board the plane was only the crew of 10 people.

UPD: at 16:30MSK 6 bodies found and both FDR and CVR are rescued.

Probably can't blame trees or hot air from the fire then. Even in Mother Russia trees don't grow that high...

Read it as "last communication was at 5:45 and plane was not reported to tower at scheduled radio comm at 6:30, last known position was at 3000ft according to FR24" and blame ignorant journalists please.
