    AI are planning on operating return leg via Pacific seasonally, it will cut flight time by four hours.

    I never considered how much of an obstacle the Himalayan and Hindu Kush play into flight operations on the sub-continent. That alone limits so much, including flight time/routing performance - that these 4 hours saved are a boon to AI, who can use the good news!
    Whatever is necessary, is never unwise.

        This won't be that unusual...

        ORD/EWR-PVG/PEK/HKG flights often go "transatlantic" during the winter months, and "transpacific" during the rest of the year.

          It is unusual for Asian carriers west of the far east to have trans pacific routes, only Etihad Cargo and Emirates Cargo have done it so far and those have ended too.

            Begins 16 October first leg will fly over Pacific the return will be through Atlantic.
