Malaysia Airlines Loses Contact With 777 en Route to Beijing

  • November 11 Update

    As announced in April, the search area has been expanded beyond an original 60,000 square kilometre search area to enable up to 120,000 square kilometres to be searched if required.
    Weather continues to impact on search operations but conditions are expected to be improved over the coming months. The safety of the search crews, as always, remains a priority, and the vessels and equipment utilised will vary to reflect operational needs.
    More than 70,000 square kilometres of the seafloor have been searched so far.
    The Search Strategy Working Group continues to review evidence associated with MH370 which may result in further refinement of, or prioritisation within, the search area.
    In the event the aircraft is found and accessible, Australia, Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China have agreed to plans for recovery activities including securing all the evidence necessary for the accident investigation.

    • That is basically the same that they have been reporting every week since April, with the exceptions that the weather back then was expected to worsen (as the winter was approaching) and that the surface searched was 50K km2, then 60k, and since several weeks ago 70k.

      • On social media, I've raised the question of the gyre that dominates the Indian Ocean. A plane crashing within its influence can have parts carried hundreds of miles from the crash site. Even to Reunion Island. So I don't take the presence of a plane part THERE as an indication that the plane hit the surface anywhere near. I can't see from the search scenario on Wikipedia if they've maybe sent camera equipped drones over the garbage patch to look for signs of wreckage. Have they? For my money, the plane and its passengers could easily be somewhere below the gyre. HUNTING in that area might be extremely difficult unless maybe the search craft are submersible.

                Though if from MH370 it would suggest the plane was losing parts over The Gulf of Thailand.

                I don't know what to make of this.

                    There is an external flange to the skin showing in the photo you posted. This leads me to think this might be space junk (perhaps part of a payload fairing). The part number(s)and debris radius should provide a clue.

                    Update: I found this photo and it looks like the forward end of an upper stage or interstage found on a launch vehicle.

                    • Certainly possible. Only a couple of months ago some bits of a SpaceX rocket fairing were found off the coast of Cornwall 14 months after launch. They looked pretty similar in shape and size.

                                A Chinese vessel has joined the search

                                Dong Hai Jiu 101 departed Singapore on 31 January, and is expected to arrive in Fremantle next week.
                                Dong Hai Jiu 101 during mobilisation in Singapore
                                Havila Harmony, which is in transit to the search area, is equipped with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in addition to the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The ROV will be used to recover the towfish lost by Fugro Discovery on 24 January, when weather conditions and ongoing AUV search operations allow
