I'm thinking that if the "hijack" code was sent, there could be the possibility that the pilots did it (set the transponder code) without the hijackers' knowledge. So the people on the ground might not want to radio the plane in order to avoid tipping off the hijackers.Be alert! America needs more lerts.

horsecrap. man. the people we have to worry about are not going to allow pilots to do what a fighter escort instructs them to do. sure, if the pilots are in control they will comply without a doubt. but if they are not in control, turning around aint gonna happen even with fighters

Anyone been watching the news that there's some brand new terrorist concerns over the ability to bring explosive stuff on board and perhaps a bit of so-called "chatter" out there???
In that context, a little over reaction might be kind of reasonable.

The fighters are not there to just to try to convince the terrorist that they should be good guys. They are there to shoot the plane down before it hits a critical target.
