  • This stinks of a scam to me...

Kalahari Airways. Ever heard of them ? Me neither until I screened an email today. The author of the email said he ( note the singular, not they or we ) is seeking funding to buy ex QANTAS 747-400's and wanted to use a members pictures.
I just hope no-one falls for this and shells out any money.

A link to the most amateurish new airline website that I ever did see.

Rumours are thatit is a Legit attempt to create this airline. But history tells these ventures are most of the times just failed attempts...

Yes, the rumours are, this is a real venture. Their website is rather hysterical in its layout, text & pictures but someone with money is behind this.
        Best regards,

Not a scam but quiet interesting ...

KALAHARI AIRWAYS REPORTED TO SEEK PURCHASE OF 747S FOR GABORONE TO LONDON FLIGHTS

[from African Aviation Tribune and CH (Swiss) Aviation]

Kalahari Airways (Gaborone) is a Botswana-based start-up that intends to offer flights from Cape Town, South Africa to London Gatwick via Gaborone, Botswana using three ex-Qantas (QF, Sydney Kingford Smith) B747-400s, The African Aviation Tribune reports.

According to the Gaborone-based firm, it aims to attract the growing Botswana-bound business and tourist market by cutting out "stressful" stopovers in Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, Gaborone's & Maun's main feeder hub. So far, one B747-400 has reportedly been acquired with a crowdfunding initiative having now been set up to help fund the purchase of a further two. "I decided to try crowdfunding having found lots of encouragement for my project but no funding other than my own, due to the ongoing reluctance by Venture Capital Investors to invest in high risk areas in the current economic climate," said CEO Denis Coghlan.

Once acquired, maintenance will be outsourced to SAA Technical in Johannesburg. Botswana last saw direct service to Europe with British Airways (BA, London Heathrow) in the late 90s, with national carrier Air Botswana (BP, Gaborone) itself having considered the acquisition of a used 777 with which to commence international routes.

Having read some more now I have to retract my previous "scam" statement. It does indeed seem genuine....but I can't see that website and a PO Box address attracting too many serious investors.

I wonder if this is an attempt to secure newer 747s for Iran.
