  • LOCKHEED L-1011 TriStar Possible Sighting?

Are there still any Lockheed L-1011 TriStars flying these days, other than the military ones for the RAF?

I swear on a stack of bibles that I saw one on approach in to Dubai, United Arab Emirates the other day, but I was driving on a crowded highway and could only take fleeting glances at it while driving as my wife was yelling at me to keep my eyes on the road.

I also think NASA flys an L-1011 in the U.S. (I think it's NASA isn't it???) But I can't imagine what the NASA L-1011 would be doing in Dubai?

I'm pretty sure it was an L-1011! I think I can tell the difference between a DC-10 / MD-11 and an L-1011 due mainly to the different design in the engine / intake designs in the tail.

Any TriStar experts here? I'm pretty sure what I saw was an L-1011! Trouble is I thought the only ones left flying were with the RAF and possibly NASA. But this one was not a dull military gray color, it had a lot of white on it.

    Thanks for any help.

Barq Aviation is still flying with one or two 1011's in the middle east and Africa so probably you saw one of those.

NASA doest't have a TriStar but Orbital Sciences has one to launch Pegasus rockets.

The Sands Corporation still flies the L-1011. I've seen it at ORD once and LAS several years ago.

In June 2006 Marina Bay Sands announce it would build the Casino. Local spotters hoped to see the Tristar, the 2SP's came, so did the 73's, GV's the lot, the Casino opened, we almost gave up hope, but we kept the faith. Departing BKK the wonderful Sands Tristar.. N388LS. Lockheed L-1011-500 Tristar. JetPhotos.com is the biggest database of aviation photographs with over 5 million screened photos online!

The Sands 1011 is grounded for some time allready. Damaged after severe floods at Bangkok.

Any chance it will fly soon? I was wondering about that since the floods, I forgot about that.

The RAF still has some that are used as airborne tankers.

According to Wikipedia, and always remember to never just assume it is right, Askari Aviation has two left. Their website doesn't say much, at least that I could find, but it does have a couple of L-1011 pictures on it.

Allrighty then. After viewing the Barq Aviation website address provided above by ErwinS, I believe that what I spotted was their aircraft. Thanks also for properly identifying the Orbital Science Co. L-1011.

It was a joy and a thrill for me to have spotted a rare L-1011. Too bad I was driving at the time and could not stop to take it in completely.

Thanks to all above for your swift, knowledgeable and kind replies.
