Aviation Herald - News, Incidents and Accidents in Aviation

am i missing something here? why not call the a/c and ask, "hey, you guys ok?" fighters arrive on scene and instruct crew to rtb and no one says, "um, why? we're fine"

I'm thinking that if the "hijack" code was sent, there could be the possibility that the pilots did it (set the transponder code) without the hijackers' knowledge. So the people on the ground might not want to radio the plane in order to avoid tipping off the hijackers.
Be alert! America needs more lerts.

So do you think that we should have believed the US soldiers that had been taken prisioners by Sadam when they were saying on cammera that they were being treated well?

let's be serious, if they were being hijacked do you really think the hijackers would have gotten scared and said, "hey, mohammed, they may shoot us down, we better listen and surrender. let the pilots fly back to manaus."

horsecrap. man. the people we have to worry about are not going to allow pilots to do what a fighter escort instructs them to do. sure, if the pilots are in control they will comply without a doubt. but if they are not in control, turning around aint gonna happen even with fighters

You didn't understand. The ATC could ask "how are you guys?" and the pilot could answer "we are ok" with a gun against his head.

The fighters are not there to just to try to convince the terrorist that they should be good guys. They are there to shoot the plane down before it hits a critical target.

Anyone been watching the news that there's some brand new terrorist concerns over the ability to bring explosive stuff on board and perhaps a bit of so-called "chatter" out there???

In that context, a little over reaction might be kind of reasonable.

A big terrorist event with a 767 would kind of suck.

i got that. once fighters were there though it seems ridiculous to force them to actually rtb. if they complied in turning around, clearly there are no hijackers.

so we cave in and force every a/c flying to land because of chatter? the chatter i heard was over people taking tiny tubes of toothpaste to sochi where some dude is to put all the little tubes together.

we are giving them EXACTLY what they want.

Every flying airplane has been grounded?

I know lawyers think differently, but I guess the fraction part from 5th grade math was not one of your strong suits.
