PDX - Portland to OGG - Kahului (Maui, Hawaii) March 13th
Hawaiian 767-300ER

This was one of the planes Hawaiian got from LTU and still has some signage in the cabin in German. The seats are uncomfortable bulky leather things that are really showing their age – they’re extremely tall too, it’s nearly impossible to see the projection screens over the top of them. The aircraft was approximately 80% full with lots and lots of children. Standard boarding process, pretty mellow, lots of folks going on vacation. A bit of a problem after pushback trying to get the tug disconnected from the nose gear, but it only took a few minutes of back and forth pushing - still made an on time departure.

Flight time was 5h45m with very little turbulence. Food was horrible, and they are still charging a $5 fee for headsets to listen to the really horrible movie – that always bugs me, but whatever. I’d rather spend my $5 on a Mai Tai – they are really good. Service was friendly, with juice offered several times during the flight.

Landing on OGG’s short runway was a little abrupt, but nothing outside of routine.

OGG – Kahului to PDX – Portland March 19th
Hawaiian 767-300ER

This was one of the planes delivered to Hawaiian new from Boeing but with the older style interior. Still the seats were much better than those on the ex-LTU plane were. This flight was probably only 50% full, which was great for passengers and allowed people to spread out for the trip home.

Flight time was 4h35m – fully 70 minutes less than the westbound flight. Some light chop, but generally very smooth. Good friendly service, bad food again though. I guess we should be happy they didn’t charge us for the food anyway… Before the on time landing at 11:10 p.m. the crew asked passengers to raise their window shades. I always find it interesting that some airlines do this.

Landing was very smooth and we were just happy not to have to change planes – thanks for the Maui direct Hawaiian! Now how about a Kona direct next?

Great report!! Still never got the chance to fly to Hawai'i on any airline other than CO, but Hawaiian is in my list of "to-flys"...

Good report. I'll be flying to OGG on DL next month but sometime when I go out there I want to try Aloha and their 737's. I've heard they have good service. That sucks about the food, but at least you got some! BTW my 200th post :D
