MCI is not too convenient..25 miles from downtown KC and literally surrounded by farmland. Lately though, there is a TON of growth by the airport and in 10 years i expect it to be landlocked and very much a part of the Metro! Other than that i dont really like the location of IAD or FCO, they're too far from the city!

IAH always comes up.

It's not really in Houston

Well, in terms of closeness to the city, I've gotta say (sadly it had to come to this  )... ACY... ACY is about a 25 minute drive from the city and is landlocked in a suburban town, while about 2 miles or less from downtown there are thousands of acres of open space, around the Bader Field area. (AIY- Bader Field is a private airfield)

I think ORD is a bit of a hike from Chicago also, and RSW is pretty far from the beach and tourist areas.

As I used to live 20mins from KIAD. It's not near DC but it is not a very long drive to downtown. 30mins if I recall. KDCA is right there in downtown DCA. ORD- 15-25mins. EBBR was 10 mins from DT. Brussels. I guess I've been lucky and never getting stuck in traffic on the way to an airport  .

Too bad meigs is now gone.. that was right in the center of CHI-TOWN. Such a sad sight to see it gone :'(

It's not really in Houston

A lot of airports are not really in their city- Part of O'Hare is in Elk Grove Village, Detroit Metro is in Romulus, Michigan...

Well LIT is technically in Little Rock. But it's way out in the industrial area, so it takes awhile to get there from about any residential area in the city.

The 2 cities I've been to with the farthest out airports are Halifax and Edmonton. Both these airports get quite a bit of traffic but are way outside of the cities they serve.
I however liked the Halifax Downtown to Halifax Intl drive. It takes you through the city then on nice forrested roads. It's not all busy and crazy like an inner-city airport like Boston or La Guardia.

HAM- It is practically surrounded by the city, so no new runways. Sure, it is expanding and improving, but I still regret that there were some tree-huggers preventing the proposed new Hamburg-Kaltenkirchen airport. It would have been outside Hamburg, with no NIMBYs, 2 parallel runways and interstate access, but no, trees were more important :shakehea: .

Other airports that come to mind: LHR, LGW, STN, LTN, all for the same reason: NIMBYs :x .

In pilots' point of view Nice is FAR FROM BEING NICE
In addition to the location at the bottom of Angels'Bay and surrounded by mountainous terrain, as everything has been built up on sea, are the landing and take-off procedures.
On prevailing eastern wind pattern, when on finals, your pilots have to zig-zag at steep angles on kinda of baionet pattern to avoid the  Antibes' old fort and town center  instead of flying a normal straight lined path !!!! :x
This is courtesy of those f*ck*n tree-huggers and cigales'song lovers !!
When taking off, your pilots have to bank quite sharply just after getting off the ground and while undercarriage is being retracted.
Why ! AHhh sight ! PARDI to avoid the mountain looming around and preserve the quitness of the city, just off the airport perimeter !! :skeptic:

If you have never been to CLL, there is a huge fire training school next to the airport. So at the end of the runway, there is always smoke clouds. Imagine the confusion for passengers that have never been there.

I'm :topicoff: again:

At PHL--there is some kind of smokestack/pollution facility in between the airport and downtown. When it is in use, a flame appears at the top, blocking the top of a skyscraper (from Concourse F). It gives the appearance that the building is on fire! My first time at PHL, I thought there was another terrorist attack--this was on 10-11-01 I think :(

DFW isn't very convenient to get to Dallas OR Ft Worth. It's between the 2 cities but at least 30-40 minutes to their respective downtown areas.

Buenos Aires's Aeroparque Jorge Newbery is bad ubicated. Stucked between the river and the city, there are absolutely no ways it could expand but moving. It is the biggest airport in the country in terms of pax and it only has two runways.

(Frankfurt) Hahn is almost in Niedersachsen, if you understand what I mean...

my vote goes to SEA.
although it might be somewhat centrally located between seattle and tacoma, its physical location surrounded by busy suburbs and neighborhoods leaves it without room to grow. ok, it can grow, sea-tac just has to buy more homes from people. the 3rd runway project has been ongoing for years and atc probs continue to slow the airport.
 (side note: I LOVE AIRPLANE NOISE!)

ORD...they seriously need to stop with that airport and go for the other idea with Piatone or wherever that is.

Honestly though....PIT is badly situated! 20 miles from Downtown.....and about an hour by bus...or 25-45 minutes by car depending on traffic.

Bombay International Airport is located fairly close to the city but traffic makes the 10 - 15 mile trip take up to 2 hours. It's horrible.

 Another one
Yaoundé Downtown, nicknamed "Le Porte Avions" (the aircraft carrier) :skeptic: Built on a plateau made by levelling some of the numerous hills doting the cameroonian capital city, which spreads itself on "7 hills, like Rome"....
Just 1,850 meters long, its runway played host to an average 55 weekly services operated by Cameroon Airlines with 737-200s....Seeing the guys at the "desk" grappling with the finals was always interesting, as the beacons were lined away from the plateau itself :smilewin:
This airport is now used by bantam and lightweights since 1998 when
-a new railway line linking Yaoundé to Douala and
-new international N'Simalen Airport, located 12 miles away were opened to traffic.

Definitely the new Kuala Lumpur International Airport. 80km from downtown KL, the drive takes over an hour (although you can take the express train which cuts it to about 30-odd minutes).

I would also agree with Narita being a long way outta town.

And, yes, that poor airport which I have nothing good to say about - Washington Dulles. Maybe my opinion is skewed given that I live 5 minutes from National.

Also agree with Airigami, in addition to being far from everything, Dulles has not a single nice photo location :nonono: ....unlike Narita. :)

From someone that lives inside the city's point of view, I seriously just don't like Sydney Airport..... it's always noisy around the city with those flights landing so early in the morning!!
