I think that anyone's worst flight had to have been on Tower Air! I don't know how this airline survived for so long!

What is Tower Air? What made them so bad?

Tower operated classic 747s in the 90s. These were surplus Pan Am planes with torn seats, everything held together with ducktape, reading lights that won't go off, aluminum foil being substituted for window shades, digusting food, and.....(drum roll please)

Fuel Stops To Save Money

I was on a Tower flight where an emergency landing had been made because the airline thought they could cheap out on gas by not filling the reserve. As it turns out, our flight was put in a holding pattern and we had to be taken out of the pattern immediately!

Air Canada A320... YYC to YVR in November 2002.

Besides the plane stalling at the gate upon departure from YYC, the plane's electronics were continually malfunctioning in the cabin (interior lighting flickering on and off, warning lights constantly changing during ascent). I had a crustie AC F/A inform me it was nothing to be concerned about in a matter-of-fact tone (does AC have non-crustie F/As?). I hope to God they sent that aircraft into heavy maintenance after unloading at YVR.

Overall, a terrible flight. The plane was already 30 minutes behind schedule by the time it arrived in YYC, which is very typical of the airline.

How can a plane stall at its gate? I thought a plane can only stall in flight.

Northwest airlines, B757 at DFW sometime July of 92+/- a few years:

I don't remember alot, I was about 16, I think I just got my license. We were taxiing to the runway when the engines shutdown and we come to a stop a ways a way from the terminal. "Ladies and gentlemen, we had a power failure in the flight deck and we will have to wait for a tug to come get us to get us back to the gate." No power= no A/C, no A/C in DFW in July, = hot.+ a baby with a stinky + a tug that takes 30 minutes to get to plane =HELL! I we were given 3 vouchers for free travel on NW. (One for my mom, me and my dad.)

Do think airlines fill their tanks for every flight? Don't be silly... :shakehea: THAT would be a waste of money.

No, I don't. Airlines do have to burn enough fuel to reach the landing weight. Tower air did not fill the reserve tank. That's why my flight had to be taken out of holding.

Why are you so mad? Did you work for Tower Air or something?

That's why my flight had to be taken out of holding.

How did you come to find out they did not fill their "reserve tank"? (I have yet to work on a plane with such an item, makes no sense to me...) And most people prefer NOT to hold.

Why are you so mad? Did you work for Tower Air or something?

Who said I was mad? I just corrected your spelling and asked you a question! :P

Jeff,

It actually is DuckTape. People say DuctTape, and use DuctTape in their writing, but technically, it's DuckTape. It's a brand name, which has somehow beome generic, much like Aquaguard (which is a brand name, they are actually water-filters, not Aquaguards).

Anyway, I don't want to get all technical, use whatever you want...

JeffinDEN, my apologies. What I meant by reserves was not allowing any reserve fuel in their weight and balances and not alloting any extra fuel for emergencies. Sure, I know a bit about planes myself and I know nobody wants to be put in holding BUT sometimes its unavoidable :( . That's what the extra fuel is for. Tower was probably not expecting to be put in holding.

T,
What in the world are you smoking? It is "Duct Tape". As in what is used to seal ducts, as in the HVAC type in your house... :shakehea: That is about as techincal as you can get with it.....

Don't be stupid. "Duck Tape" is a brand name for DUCT TAPE. look it up ... if you can figure out how.....

Nope. There is nothing such as Duct Tape.

It has come about to be called "Duct Tape" because of the way in which it is used. But it is actually "DuckTape", Duck being the brand.

I am 100% sure of this fact.

I take back part of what I said. There is something as Duct Tape - it originally used to be (and still is in some cases) Duck Tape.

So I guess either one is ok.

That's great! I have permission from a teenage indian linving in New Jersey.

It's not about permission. what I meant was that it's ok for anybody to use anything. Neither is right or wrong. I'm not here to give 'permission'. Hell, you can use anything you want as far as I'm concerned - it's your choice.

It just gives me peace of mind to know what's correct (in this case, both).

No permission issues... :D

18 is sort of near the end of the teens anyway. I only get to be a teen for one more year, and I'm gonna enjoy it. I got no regrets being a teenager!

i'm sorry, I'm with Tanuj on this one...

when was the last time you asked for an adhesive bandage? because that's what a Band-Aid is. Or when was the last time you asked for a two-ply tissue? That's what a Kleenex is. You do associate things with their respective brands. Or perhaps even Diet Coke/Pepsi. No one asks for an aspartame-free soda.

Or Scotch tape
Or Cello tape

Duck tape is perfectly fine...

A Spirit flight just before 9-11 EWR-->FLL (yes, they did used to fly to EWR).

First of all, the flight (which was at like 9 PM) was CANCELLED, and they scheduled a new flight for the next morning at around 8:30. Once we got on the plane (waiting in line for check-in took an hour, and when we got there, we were told the desk was closed and moved to the other side of the terminal), it was overbooked, hot, and smelt like orange cleaner.

The flight was scheduled on a DC9. The seats were old and beat up, and my window shade wouldn't go all the way up. On the way to the runway, the plane got quiet (like the engines had been shut off), and the capitan came on the PA and told us that the "Aircraft had ceased to function, and we would have to be towed back to the gate.

Luckily, they had a flight at ACY which had just gotten in from FLL and they somehow flew it up, and about an hour later, we were taxiing for takeoff once again.

This was just after my best friend's Spirit flight had been delayed for 8 hours at EWR two nights earlier... a "mini-riot" occured and police were dispatched to the scene.

That is like saying because some cans of soda say "coca cola" on the side (not all) that every kind of it is called coca cola.

SEA to HNL

Reason: Toliets plugged up after 2 hours out, not to mention electrical problems. Had to turn around and head back to SEA for another hour or so delay. Fun though. More flight time.
