Going to the airport
I woke up at 3:30 am (for a 9:20 departure), not because I had to, but out of excitement! I was extremely excited to be visiting the bay area again!

My day started off nicely, I was on IM with a couple people before I left. But then it got ruined! Since my mom did not want to drive to the airport, we took the shuttle. MCI Shuttle used to be the company that provided shuttle services for MCI, but now it is some company called Super Shuttle, and I HATE IT! This was my first experience (and my brother's 3rd) with super shuttle, and it was something that doesn't make me want to go back to them.

They were supposed to pick us up at 7am, but it was 7:20, and it still wasn't there, so we called Super Shuttle, and was put on hold for 10 minutes. They finally answered and said it was about 5 minutes away. It was 7:45 and it still wasn't there! We called back, they told us it was 15 miles away... WTF! It finally came at 8am...an hour late! My flight was supposed to depart at 9:20, and it takes a little over an hour to get to the airport!

Arriving at the airport
We got to the airport around 9, and checked in, and went through security. The check-in agents at MCI were extremely friendly! They were smiling and happier than usual check-in agents!

Security was easy, I had no problems with them! Except they had to empty out my entire backpack, to "search" it. I normally would be attempting to go on a rant about the TSA, or make a joke about them, but I understand why they went through it. I had 3 cameras, 12 batteries, a battery charger, a bagel, a blanket and an extra memory card for my camera. If you saw that on an X-ray machine, wouldn't you be suspicious of that?!?! A high school student bringing a camera, bagel and blanket is definately somebody who poses a threat... lol, okay, i'll move on from making comments about the TSA....

Boarding
They began boarding Business Select passengers (A1-15) while I was going through security, and when I got everything gathered they began boarding my group! I enjoy the "Open seating" policy that WN has, but I also think it has it's pros and cons... I got into my position in line (A44) and boarded....I wasn't able to grab any good pictures, but I got these really quickly. I am really disappointed, because I saw 2 YX EMB-170s taxi by!!! They look really sharp! I hated them at first, but seeing them in person changed my mind about them.

Anyways... this was ship N381SW, just doing a thru-stop here at MCI...it's entire route was BWI-MCI-OAK-SEA

Taxi and Takeoff
This taxi was exactly like every other taxi is on Southwest.... EXTREMELY FAST! It took us less than 3 minutes to get to Runway 19 from Terminal B!

Here is a video showing some of the safety demo, some of the taxi, and the takeoff!!! :)

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mq8-x30LsEQ&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mq8-x30LsEQ&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Here are some pictures I got during the taxi,

If any of you haven't been to MCI, this picture shows exactly what it is like! WN dominates here at MCI!

Oh, i forgot! YX has a 'hub' here at MCI! But their operations here aren't as large as WN's!

This pisses me off! UA 757s are my favorite aircraft, especially the ones in the 'battleship' colors... I can never get any good pictures of them! they always end up screwed up!!!!

Then all of a sudden I see a bunch of ERJs! I was wondering what they were doing here!

Getting ready to take off from Runway 19R @ MCI! Idk why, but for some reason it seems like I always take off from 19R and land on 1L (1 is the opposite of 19 @ MCI)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3122/3102772651_6c0e32abda.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/9798284@N07/3102772651/)

I have a video of the takeoff, I will post it later!

Here is a picture of MCI as we make a sharp turn to the west! Notice how there are only 10 planes on the ground!! Also notice how 4 of the 10 are WN jets!

and another pic... you can see how the terminals are designed! they are really easy to use, it literally took me less than 5 minutes from check-in to boarding!

In-Flight
This flight was easily the BEST flight I have ever been on!!!! :D It had the usual "Southwest hospitality"! They weren't making jokes during the flight, but they were easily the BEST AND MOST PROFESSIONAL flight crew I have ever had! They kept on coming through the cabin like every 10 minutes asking people if they wanted anything! The flight crew is ultimately one of the biggest factors in a customer's experience on an airline, and I was really happy to have this flight crew who demonstrated all 3 of SWA's traits really well!!! (Servant's heart, Warrior spirit, Fun-LUVing attitude)

They did 3 drink/snack services!!!! Southwest is the only airline in the US that actually gives anything good!!!!!!!! I had a bag of "chip's ahoy" cookies, cheese crackers, and short bread cookies! Then on the 2nd and 3rd services I got chips ahoy chocolate chip cookies, and peanuts and pretzels...

I also like SWA, because they are the only airline that has a variety of drinks!!! Other US airline drink menus are usually like "Coke, Diet Coke, Water, Coffee" but SWA had all of the usual stuff + Dr. Pepper!!!!!! :) & more!! My mom had their coffee, and she actually enjoyed it! (my mom usually hates most coffee..)

The only complaints I have about this flight is that there was no equivalent to UA's "live from the flight deck"!!! I love listening to that! My friends think i'm crazy, but it is my favorite part about flying UA! (their 757s are nice too...)

Here are some pictures I took during the flight...

Western Kansas! How exciting!!! :D

THIS WAS AN AMAZING FLIGHT!!!!!!!

Southwest got me into Oakland 50 MINUTES EARLY!!!!! FIFTY MINUTES EARLY!!!!!! Due to some favorable winds, and Southwest's awesomeness 8-)

We had to wait about 15 minutes for a gate to open up... and in that time the flight attendants were singing and telling jokes, and showing the "fun-luving attitude" that all WN employees have!!!! :D

This is one of the things I love about Southwest, and one of the reasons I will keep coming back!!! :D

I don't remember all of them, but one of the jokes was about a penguin going to Chile... lol

Here are some pics I got while waiting for a gate to open up...the sun was in the way, so the lighting was waaayyy too bright! and it kind of ruined some of my pictures...

Oakland is full of LCCs, here is a pic of a JetBlue jet I took using the zoom on my camera (10x optical) to take a pic through the window on the other side of the plane!.... in the photo you can see 2 airlines that definately have a presence at OAK, but are really the minority there... JetBlue and UPS...the 2 majorities at OAK are Southwest and FedEx...

Terminal 2 (the newer area) of OAK is REALLY NICE!!! I like it a lot more than SFO or SJC!!! :D

but the windows at OAK, are really dirty & affect the color of the picture a lot!!! :-x

This photo shows the true spirit of Oakland International Airport! I count 7 Southwest birds! (including the winglet) there were 2 more on the other side of the airport! +2 taxiing! OAK is definitely a WN fortress!

Jas-

Great Report. Its cool to hear of a passenger and Customer who knows our three important attitudes about WN!

Glad you enjoyed the flight, and very cool to see you got a -300 with winglets! I have gotten on two of them so far.

I am shocked to see how big WN is at OAK it is quite amazing indeed. Would be nice to see a STL-OAK on WN but guess not yet!

SWA still knows how to do it right with their Customer and it is pleasing to hear someone like you rave about them. I would submit a picture or two to SWA of those wing shots. flyingphotog may be able to help you out with that, WN is always looking for some wingtip shots to submit in their calendar.

Great report!

I LUV WN's peanuts!!! :) that is one of the reason's i fly them! lol, other airlines give out nasty pretzels (which i understand why they do that), but I enjoy WN b/c they give out peanuts....

That's cool, that you got the same shot of the same cockpit! i always wonder how many other aviation enthusiasts have pictures of the same plane that I was on...

WN pilots taxi fast because they get a reward for arriving early.Just 1 thing I don't like about WN.Some of there pilots are nasty. My sister is a F/A for Air Wisconsin, and one day after leaving the runway,ATC told a WN jet to hold for them. This is what the Air Wisconsin pilot said the WN pilot said.Quote"You want us to hold for the baby jet?!"Them the AW pilot said,Quote"What did you call us?"

WN pilots do not get a "reward" if you mean personally? WN encourages early arrivals because it makes it easier to allow quick, and fast turn around times for the next flight. The "reward" to the company is more flying times add mores money to the company, which of course means more money to the paycheck too.

As for the Meanie Pilot, I have heard that before, and that is a joke. He wasn't name calling the airline or jet, simply a joke. Some of out Customers do seemt o have a problem with our jokes, I had a couple of complaints at the gate myself when I worked a flight they complained about.

Bonus? Either way no WN pilots get that either.

WN pilots are not rewarded anything "extra" for early, on time arrivals. They get their paychecks as is under the contract and that is it.

CO used to if they don't still do offer 50 dollars bonus to the employees for an on time rate.

Are you thinking of profit sharing Boeingking? If so that is entirely different and not reflected on the early arrival time situation.

Ok, I agree that the WN pilot was probably joking! While most of my friends have had pleasant experiences on WN, some of the most common complaints, I hear about the airline is that some of WN jokes aren't funny and are sometimes downright rude. I personally, I have never flown WN, so I can't validate or invalidate those complaints.

As for the trip report, excellent job.:-D Very nice mix of pictures and plenty of details as well. Looks like Southwest still provides excellent service, I can't believe that they gave that much FREE food and three beverage runs on a four-hour flight! I so badly wish that other US airlines would still serve free food, but most of the legacy carriers keep taking passenger amenities away.

Keep up the excellent work!

Rohan

Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate it!!! :D

lol, it's a 3 hour flight! and we got in 50 minutes early, so a 2 hour & 10 minute flight!

The number of drink services surprised me a lot! I've been on an almost 5 hour flight on a different airline, and it they only did ONE drink/snack service!!! they gave out nasty pretzels (with an option to purchase an overpriced snack box)

Ok Dokey then! But I promise, WN pilots do not get any reward whatsoever period. Ask any WN employee here they all will say the same thing. Your sister is wrong about the bonus and ontime/early arrival thing Sorry.

no,BECAUSE I'M RIGHT!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so your both of you are putting your opinions across very strongly. BoeingKing77 do you have any other reliable sources, eg., newspaper articles, websites, news videos, etc. that prove your point? In addition, let's flip the question around: If WN pilots, don't get rewarded for being on-time, do they get punished for being late?

To change the subject a tad here...

Jaspreet, that has to be one of the best TR's I have read in a good long time. The mixture of pictures and words was just enough and You didn't completely bore me with the facts. You didn't leave out any important parts but you included just enough extra info to make it a readable review. The videos were also a great addition. Keep up the great work.

You seem to have taken quite a few pictures that are worth a shot in the DB.

I deleted a number of posts in this topic because it is becoming nonsensical. Boeingking stop arguing over a fact that you are wrong on. If you are going to state facts back it up with information that is reliable not your sister knows someone who worked for WN.

I'm sorry, but I definitely agree with this point. BoeingKing77, don't be offended, but your sister's friend isn't necessarily a reliable source and until we have have one, we can't support one side or the other.

As far as "proof" or information from my side..

This an internal information thing. It is inside the contract of the Union at Southwest Airlines, so all one can do is take the word of a Southwest Employee (me) and I will be the first to admit I am wrong if another WN employee corrects me, but in the 5 months I worked there, the way the system was set up WN Pilots did NOT get a bonus whatsoever for an ontime arrival.

If this changed since I left the position then I stand corrected, but I truly doubt so.

No offense, Alex, but as someone who only worked for WN for five months (and I assume not in flight ops?), I'm not sure you're a reliable source either. I can tell you that rumors about WN crews getting some kind of a bonus for early arrival have been circulating around the industry for some time and have often been used to explain what's become to be known as the "Southwest Taxi Speed".
