This trip came about because I get the flying bug from time to time and want to fly somewhere. This year I have flown to Melbourne and Sydney, so I thought I would go somewhere local.
On my many spotting trips to Adelaide airport, I see the REX SAABs coming and going, so I decided this trip I would fly on one and see what they are like as I have had only been on one turboprop aircraft , a Beech 1900C a few years ago.

Got to the airport early. Check in was no problem since I used the web check in I already had the seat I wanted.
Security was painless and I spent the next hour waiting to board the flight.

Since a SAAB 340 can’t use an aerobridge, a walk on the tarmac is required, but as my luck would have it the aircraft I was flying on would be the one parked the furtherest away. A long walk through a cold concrete and steel walkway which looked more like something you would find at a jail not a recently built airport terminal (a bus was used to take passengers from the aircraft to the old international terminal that had been converted to a temporary arrivals terminal. So why a bus is not used to take passengers out to the aircraft and do away with the jail like walkway altogther). More on the arrivals later on.
I know someone who works for Regional Express and he let the flight attendant on today’s flight know that I would be on the flight so she would not be surprised when I got back on the plane at Kingscote. When I boarded the plane she said ‘ah you’re the guy who going there and back with us’.
After the safety demo engines were started and I soon found out how noisy turboprops are.
Take off was a noisy affair with the aircraft wobbling from side to side. Once over the water the flight was smooth. There was quite a bit of vibration and that caused my window blind to close so I had to keep pushing it back up.
The plane was nearly full with one spare seat that I could see was next to me. Passengers looked like backpackers etc.
I was not expecting anything service wise but water was handed out (I managed to open this one without spilling it). However the smooth flying conditions came to an end over Kangaroo Island and the aircraft began to bounce about quite a bit.

Landing was not the smoothest, but acceptable given the conditions. Once on the ground the pilot put the props in reverse pitch and stomped on the brakes quite hard.
The terminal at Kingscote is quite basic with a check in desk, a couple of car rental desks and that’s about it.
When our plane landed a Cessna 404 belonging to Air South Regional was just leaving. I bet the baggage guy was thinking ‘good that one is gone so it is an easy day now’ then our flight lands.
After a quick look at the flight deck it was into the terminal to check in for the return flight.
Once everyone had checked in the car rental offices were closing for the afternoon. The airport probably closed for a few hours after we took off.

Got back on the plane and sat in the same seat as I was in on the way over.
This time the plane would have been only half full and the majority of the passengers were probably aged 50+.
Takeoff was a bit bumpy and as before it was quite rough once in the air. It smoothed out once over water.
Again water was offered. Flight was uneventful and I had the last row of seats to myself.
Once over land approaching Adelaide it got bumpy again. Landed with bit of a thump and roar from the props in reverse pitch.

Once the aircraft came to a stop a bus was waiting to take us to the old international terminal which had been converted to an arrivals terminal. This was done after passenger complaints about having to walk in the previously mentioned jail like walkway to and from aircraft and when arriving having to go through a security checkpoint and climb four flights of stairs to get back into the terminal. So a quick fix solution was to have passengers depart normally through the main terminal and arrive in the converted international terminal and use buses to ferry passengers from the aircraft to the terminal.
Why don’t Regional Express move everything into the old international terminal and use it for both departures and arrivals and bus passengers to and from the plane and do away with the long walk and the jail like walkway altogether?.
Overall Regional Express has a good service and is on time and the aircraft are clean and tidy. I would fly with them again. However when flying with them a packed lunch and water might be needed to get to the plane.
On my many spotting trips to Adelaide airport, I see the REX SAABs coming and going, so I decided this trip I would fly on one and see what they are like as I have had only been on one turboprop aircraft , a Beech 1900C a few years ago.

Since a SAAB 340 can’t use an aerobridge, a walk on the tarmac is required, but as my luck would have it the aircraft I was flying on would be the one parked the furtherest away. A long walk through a cold concrete and steel walkway which looked more like something you would find at a jail not a recently built airport terminal (a bus was used to take passengers from the aircraft to the old international terminal that had been converted to a temporary arrivals terminal. So why a bus is not used to take passengers out to the aircraft and do away with the jail like walkway altogther). More on the arrivals later on.
I know someone who works for Regional Express and he let the flight attendant on today’s flight know that I would be on the flight so she would not be surprised when I got back on the plane at Kingscote. When I boarded the plane she said ‘ah you’re the guy who going there and back with us’.
After the safety demo engines were started and I soon found out how noisy turboprops are.
Take off was a noisy affair with the aircraft wobbling from side to side. Once over the water the flight was smooth. There was quite a bit of vibration and that caused my window blind to close so I had to keep pushing it back up.
The plane was nearly full with one spare seat that I could see was next to me. Passengers looked like backpackers etc.
I was not expecting anything service wise but water was handed out (I managed to open this one without spilling it). However the smooth flying conditions came to an end over Kangaroo Island and the aircraft began to bounce about quite a bit.

Landing was not the smoothest, but acceptable given the conditions. Once on the ground the pilot put the props in reverse pitch and stomped on the brakes quite hard.
The terminal at Kingscote is quite basic with a check in desk, a couple of car rental desks and that’s about it.
When our plane landed a Cessna 404 belonging to Air South Regional was just leaving. I bet the baggage guy was thinking ‘good that one is gone so it is an easy day now’ then our flight lands.
After a quick look at the flight deck it was into the terminal to check in for the return flight.
Once everyone had checked in the car rental offices were closing for the afternoon. The airport probably closed for a few hours after we took off.

Got back on the plane and sat in the same seat as I was in on the way over.
This time the plane would have been only half full and the majority of the passengers were probably aged 50+.
Takeoff was a bit bumpy and as before it was quite rough once in the air. It smoothed out once over water.
Again water was offered. Flight was uneventful and I had the last row of seats to myself.
Once over land approaching Adelaide it got bumpy again. Landed with bit of a thump and roar from the props in reverse pitch.

Once the aircraft came to a stop a bus was waiting to take us to the old international terminal which had been converted to an arrivals terminal. This was done after passenger complaints about having to walk in the previously mentioned jail like walkway to and from aircraft and when arriving having to go through a security checkpoint and climb four flights of stairs to get back into the terminal. So a quick fix solution was to have passengers depart normally through the main terminal and arrive in the converted international terminal and use buses to ferry passengers from the aircraft to the terminal.
Why don’t Regional Express move everything into the old international terminal and use it for both departures and arrivals and bus passengers to and from the plane and do away with the long walk and the jail like walkway altogether?.
Overall Regional Express has a good service and is on time and the aircraft are clean and tidy. I would fly with them again. However when flying with them a packed lunch and water might be needed to get to the plane.
