Jet carrying oilsands workers lands in Saskatoon on only one engine; no one hurt

SASKATOON - There were some anxious moments in the skies over Saskatoon early Thursday morning as a plane full of Alberta oilsands workers lost use of one of its engines as it was attempting to land.
No one was hurt in the pre-dawn emergency landing and subsequent evacuation.
The chartered plane - a Canadian North Airlines Boeing 737 - was less than minute away from touchdown when the right engine gave out, said Kelly Kaylo, a vice president with the airline. It was a "contained engine failure" meaning there was no structural damage to the plane.
"The crew followed all the proper procedures declaring an emergency landing and then proceeded on to land without any further incident," Kaylo said in a telephone interview from Yellowknife. "It was within a minute of the actual landing so there was no change in how that aircraft would have landed."
Airport emergency crews swung into action after the pilot got the plane on the ground, said Bill Restall, CEO of the Saskatoon Airport Authority.
"When he did land, the engine did have some fire involved with it and our specialized vehicles were able to extinguish that fire in a hasty manner," Restall said.
"It's not something we like to deal with, but in the case of our protocols and contingency plans, it worked exactly as we would have expected it to."
There were 102 passengers and five crew on board the plane. The plane was on its normal weekly route ferrying workers from the oilsands near Fort McMurray, Alta., to their homes in Saskatoon, Montreal and Moncton, N.B.
Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. was the company running the charter, Kaylo said.
The plane remained at the Saskatoon airport Thursday evening while Transport Canada investigated the problem.
Alternative arrangements were being made for the workers to get home.
