A bird got sucked into the engine. What caused the fire did it take out some blades?

Very impressive recovery after the bird strike. Single engine climb, go around and return to the airport, everyone safe with the exception of the poor "pigeon" {herons I gather}.

If the engine didn't suffer serious damage then it was probably just surging while it was pureeing the birds.

I wonder if he dumped fuel? (Kidding. ) According to some reports they did (?) 757's?

At ATH they have a department that uses trained birds of prey to hunt any little critters flying around the airport. Do they do that at the UK airports?

I have seen at Manchester, officials firing a type of exploding rocket (not sure of what they call it). Also they drive around playing sounds of birds in distress to scare the feathered fiends away. Doesn't help much when you have people feeding them at AVP!!!
And the quality of the food available at the AVP keeps them comming back again and again.

The bird disrupted the air flow and the engine began a series of compressor stalls. The flight crew did the correct thing in flying the aircraft first then attend to the problem.

A bird (or any object) going through the fan and exiting usually causes very little damage. In this case, it looks like the bird went through the gas generator (engine core), when this happens engine damage is almost always severe enough to cause problems. If retarding power does not clear the stalled condition, shut the engine down.

I remember on a visit to JFK shooting on the taxi ways when they set off their anti-bird canons. We were a little to close for comfort and it left a nice ringing sound in the ears. lol

At EGCC they usually just drive a land rover around with a big megaphone on the roof with pre-recorded bird of prey sounds being blasted out in the hope it will frighten other birds away.

a bird got caught under the wing on landing.

I was watching Modern Marvels Runway episode and they showed Falcons being used at an AFB to scare off other birds.

I suppose it depends on whether they had a screwdriver handy or not.
