Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board started removing parts of a wrecked plane from a Mt. Airy neighborhood Sunday.

After documenting evidence, crews from Atlanta Air Recovery cut through parts of the plane to load it onto trucks. NTSB investigator Todd Gunther said the plane will be taken to a secure facility in Atlanta for further investigation.

Gunther also released more details at a Sunday afternoon press conference about the plane's final moments. He says the plane took a hard left turn after missing its landing attempt. He says the final radar contact was 14 seconds later above the Mt. Airy neighborhood. It then took a nose-dive into someone's front yard.

Gunther said investigators will examine in Atlanta the pilot control panel to see if any warning lights were on when the plane crashed. Saturday, Gunther said there were no mechanical problems with the plane, which was only two years old.

Surry County's emergency services director, John Shelton, told WFMY News 2's Erich Spivey that 200 to 300 gallons of fuel spilled into the neighborhood. Crews will dig out the contaminated soil and replace it. They'll also test the water supply for people who request that.
