Yesterday, an A380 from Singapore Airlines departed the runway and rolled onto the grass at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) as it was towed out to the runway for the flight to Sydney. The incident was caused by problems with the tow truck (nothing to do with the plane). But the flight was cancelled and all passengers were transferred to a Boeing 747-400 aircraft. Singapore Airlines is going to assess if the A380 has sustained any damage.

From Appledaily HongKong:

So why was it being towed to the runway instead of taxing on its own?

Yeah why is that being towed instead of taxing on its own power......
Must be a headache for the airlines to have to do that, sounds kinda like a bum deal.

I ask myself that question too: Why not on its own power but the tow truck?

and try to answer:

I guess it could be such reasons as fuel emission, fuel saving, new ideal of the SIA Management. :-)

If you had Chinese characters installed in your computer like I do, your only problem would probably be how to read Chinese, like myself.

Cheers.

***SIA said a tow truck used to push back the aircraft experienced some hydraulic failure. The truck disconnected from the plane. The plane then rolled off the tarmac, onto a grass verge. ***

It seems that the tug was already disconnected from the aircraft, so it's not necessarily the problem of this issue, noh ?

And after reading it again, could it be that the media has worded it wrong, (we all know how correct the media is sometimes when it regards aviation) that maybe what they really meant was just probably the push back process.

The pushback was being conducted with a towbarless tug, they are designed to release the nosegear in a failure. As the nosegear steering was locked out the A380 became a big, reversing shopping trolley!

Thougt the the first incident happened when a 380 prototype touched a hangar or something else with its wing at Bangkok last year?

i would have thought the crew would have hit the brakes, but i guess being up there its a lot harder to judge your position on the tarmac.

Pilot hits the breaks (other than really really really gently) = A380 sitting on its tail.

Yeah, the lav of a 744 is no way to join the Mile High Club compaired to a suite!

but the weight shift (under any braking) would go back to forward, so how would it tip?

Well when you're going backwards and hit the brakes, you tend to keep going in that general direction. Simple matter of inertia.

10th month of the year (aka October)

It was just saying that this is the first incident for the A380, which had its first commercial flight last October.

i thought it was being towed, hence my weight shift comment, ah well, all is clear now.

I'm not a fanboy of the A380 or any aircraft really. this just seems like too little to late. the tug had control of the plane... they went "off course"... from the pictures you can see the cap of A380 did put on the brakes, to no satisfacition.

why didn't it pull out on it's own power? shit, talk to the insurance company and i'm SURE they can give you answers for years.

i understand the race between AB & Boi... but to me, they have both made magical birds... that i'll never fly. cheers to them both!
