OK JP Forum contributors - how about adding to this list. The F4U-Corsair was known by Japanese pilots of WW2 as "Whispering Death". How about adding to the nickname list of combat aircraft and see wht we come up with. Suggest the following format:

WW1:

Fighters
Bombers
Fighter/Bombers
Misc: (which will represent recon, transport etc type planes)

WW2: as above

Not sure if you guys want to extend this to conflicts later than WW2 - you choose.

The B52 is known as "Whispering Death". Also known as "Rolling Thunder"...............brilliant.

The Japanese called the Corsair "whistling death" not whispering. This was because of the engine cooling inlet in the leading edge of the wings that whistled in flight. If you've ever seen a Corsair fly, you probably have heard the sound.

P-38 was nicknamed "Der Gabelschwanz Teufel" (the Fork-Tailed Devil) by Luftwaffe pilots.

Either the Japanese were very poetic, or else the Allied war propagandists were.
