"An American fighter jet has crashed into the ocean near the southern Japanese island chain of Okinawa, but the pilot ejected safely.

The F15 Eagle fell into the sea 88 kilometres northeast of Okinawa's Kadena Air Base.

The US military says a search and rescue mission recovered the pilot.

A military spokesman says the cause of the accident is under investigation.

Okinawa, a tiny island chain, hosts about half of the more than 40,000 US troops in Japan. "
