After 3 great days on the North Island, it was time to leave. Over the next 6 days we toured the South Island of New Zealand. We waited awhile to check in. There were 29 people in our tour group and there was another large tour group ahead of us. Air New Zealand handles Qantas check in New Zealand. The man who checked us in had a German flag on his name tag, which indicated he speaks German. I thought that was kinda odd for such a small airport. I guess since a lot of people from all over the world come to Rotoura there is a need. After checking in we went to a small booth were we had to pay $5 in “development fees”. Every passenger traveling domestically in New Zealand had to pay the $5 tax. The woman behind the counter put a sticker on our boarding passes saying we paid the tax. Then we had snacks at the airport café while we waited for our plane. Once boarding started we went though metal detector then we walked out on the tarmac. Once onboard I realized this was a former Ansett plane. It still had the old Ansett seat covers and the bulkheads. We found our seats, there was a man in my seat. I politey told him he was in my seat and could you please move. He moved and we sat down. A little while later the door was closed and the flight attendants did the demo. After taking off I could see sheep on the hillsides. Shortly after take off an old episode of Just Shot Me started and the crew started the service. One flight attendant pushed the cart surving drinks, another handed snacks, and a third served coffee & tea. We landed in a cloudy Christchurch and after getting our bags, headed for downtown.

After 9 great days in New Zealand, we were going to Australia. It took us a while to check in because we had a problem with our tickets. Finally we had our tickets. While my aunt went to pay the $25 Development tax for traveling overseas, I went to the observation deck. The observation deck was on the roof of the terminal and looked out at the entire airport. I saw a Singapore Airlines 777-2000, a couple Air New Zealand 737-300s, and a couple Air New Zealand ATR-72s. After a couple minutes I went back downstairs. My aunt and I went through security. We had lunch at the airport café and spent our last NZ dollars. After awhile we boarded and found our seats. We were right behind Business Class. We took off in the rain and we were soon above the clouds. After drinks lunch was served. The choices were Braised Lamb or Pasta Orecchiette. I had the Pasta Orecchiette. It was basically pasta in a basil cream sauce. It came with a green leaf salad with red wine vinaigrette and pudding. Then the movie was shown, I forget what it was. As we descended into Sydney custom forms were handed out. We landed on time and headed for customs.
