Thats a great name never even thought of it that way. Neways there are a ton of dots to the east. MIA/FLL Arrivals. I'll go out once it stops raining and give ya a report.
well mostly SWA 737's over the house, got a L1011 today. Later I'll see the BA 767 and then the Aer Lingus A330. :D Maybe an Air Jamaica A310 Hooters comes in at 1:50 still in school then. :(

the only planes i have come over my house are ones with contraisl up at FL300+
We also have a couple local airports, and we have a ton of Cessnas come in.
I saw around 30 planes in 3 hours today, consisting of planes with contrials, commercial airliners without contrails, and smaller aircraft.

One really long, nice contrail today, but that's all i've seen today (i haven't been in good dot spotting locations today). I see a mix of a lot of different traffic.
HPN (White Plains, NY) Arrivals, heading westbound (bizjets and US Airways Express Dash-8's mostly)
JFK transatlantic departures (at FL 150-200)(DL 763's, AA 772's, Finnair MD-11's, Aer Lingus A330's, British and Virgin 744's, Turkish A340's, among many others)
LGA/JFK/EWR departures to Boston
EWR transatlantic departures (TAP A310's, CO 777's, among others)
IAD transatlantic departures (at FL 250-350, and almost always with contrails)(UA 777's, NW DC-10's, BA 777's, BA 763's, UA 763's, Austrian A330's, etc.)
Sikorsky S-76's heading SW and NE on their way to and from the Sikorsky Factory/Plant
EDIT: I forgot to mention some JFK/EWR Transpacific departures (NW 744's, Air China 744's, etc.)

Hi guys,
I use a monocular for dot spotting with 40 times magnification. I saw only two planes yesterday on June 20, 2003. These were:
DAN 146 (Maersk) B-737 FL360 PARAK-PATAK routing
UPS6807 B-767 FL360 BEGLA routing
Today we had strong wind, no contrails were formed even in high altitude and I saw:
MAS 4 B-747-400 FL400 BNO routing
CFG 871 B-757 FL340 PATAK routing
EVA 67 B-747-400 in new colors FL380 PATAK routing
BUC 641 (Bulgarian Air Charter) TU-154 FL360 PATAK routing
SXS 636 B-737 FL380 PATAK routing
UAE 19 A-330 FL380 PATAK routing MAVOR, BNO next
BUC 615 TU-154 FL380 PATAK routing
Anyway, dot spotting is my favorite hobby that I do in most of my free time if weather allows. :)

Hi fellows,
I saw two aircraft in the past two days.
June 28, 2003:
UAE 9991 B-747-400F FL360 BUDOP-PATAK 19:43LT ( I managed to read off some of the letters in the EMIRATES writing on the fuselage!)
June 30, 2003:
HDA 500 B-747-300 FL320 or 340 BUDOP-BNO 13:46 ( no contrail, I am guessing the FL because the pilot hasn't reported anything out of "Dragonair 500". :x It was handed over to lower ACC sector in Slovakia)
Registrations would be appreciated.
Bye.

I saw 5 airplanes overflying Hungary on July 6, 2003. Of course, traffic is much better than these few aircraft around here, I just didn't have chance to spot more.

BUC 719 TU-154 FL360 BNO 19:59

Well, this is my first post here. Last night, it took my wife and I a little longer to eat dinner out on the deck than usual. When she asked what I was doing, I told her ". . . dot spotting!" Her only response was, "Is that what you're calling it now?"
Here's what I saw;
7:52 United B737
7:56 American MD-80
8:07 American Eagle EMB 145
8:20 United B737
8:21 United B737
8:39 Alaska B737
8:44 Alaska MD-80
8:52 American West A320
all inbound to SFO at around 10000'
BTW, is there that much of difference between a 10x40 and a 10x50 pair of binoculars? I've got a 40.

Today 7/19:

SWA 737 (15)
AT 717 (10)
AA MD-80 (2)
That's what I've seen so far, of course it's only 3pm. And the planes aren't really "dots" at 2500ft. :D

Hi all,
I have miswritten sg in my previous posts. I wrote Bulgarian Holiday with BHX code instead of Balkan Holiday (BGH). Sorry.
Here are the planes what I saw last time:

what type of radio do you guys use to monitor this stuff
and isnt it illegal
????

08-24-2003, 07:53 PM
Nox we use a radio scanner to monitor ACARS, what you hear is not voice message but a "burst" of digitnal noise. Once you get the scanner up and running, you need a decoder, like AirNav or WACARS.
Good luck
I saw a AN-124 on approach to BWI from my back deck around 12:30 pm today. :D

And oh, it's not illegal at least in U.S. but in some other countries (cities) it might be illegal to own a scanner (like singapore).
As long as you dont show off to the cops, you should be fine

We went for a trip with friend to the other side of the upper area westbound track UL602 at early dawn. Observation is better in the morning from the North of this routing, and in the evening from the South due to light conditions so you have to travel a couple of miles if you want to get clear picture in your telescope. It was needed to depart in the night to get there by sunrise. Unfortunately most of the long-haul flights (many BAWs, KLMs & MAS) flew over still in the dark between 04:30-05:30 AM. This is not a main routing over Hungary, just almost 30 percent of the morning traffic flows through this area.
Location: Apc, Hungary

I never see any planes anymore.
Used to see loads, because I used to live under a flight path, about ten minutes from Melbourne Airport.
In one day, it was pretty standard to see a few Ansett 767's or 737's, and a few Qantas 747's fly over, along with a handful of Uniteds or Cathays or other similar international carriers.
I spent the best part of the first 18 years of my life walking around looking at the sky :)

I did a long journey with 3 friends yesterday just to observe some overflights in the Northern side of the country, distance was 118 km (73 SM) to hometown, Budapest.
Sat Nov 08, 2003. Location: countryside in the outskirts of village, Vizslás, Hungary. Telescopes used: 30- and 24-times magn. monoculars (friends), 40 times magn. (mine)
THY B-737 LITKU-MOPUG (heading South-East) 13:30

BAW 107 B-777 FL390 LITKU-NARKA 15:49
Unfortunately we arrived late, only a few jets overflew this time that area so we managed to see more cows than airplanes. This trip was not too successful. :x
BUT! We did our most successful "dot spotting trip" next day! (today)
We visited the countryside 150 km off to the South at this time where there is a main upper area routing with some contengency tracks and observed more than 50 huge airplanes.
I'll be back with the report ASAP.

Let's see over my house...
Spirit MD80's about 700 feet above my head (kinda loud...)
The occasional Comair CRJ in from CVG...
And lots of charters, not to mention the odd, yet consistent Air France A340 that comes around once/month.
I sure miss seeing the low-flying CO ERJ's coming from EWR and CLE... :(

We get lots of private and executive jets around this time, because it is cheaper than PHL for the company big-shots. There haven't been any charters (as it has been below 0 degrees farenheit), but we get a constant flow of MD80s (Spirit from FLL, PBI, RSW, MCO, MYR, DTW, DEN and TPA), 3 CRJ's every day (Comair from CVG), and 2 D28-Jets every day (DL from BOS).

A JAL B747 in the pattern for KORD...

This one taken tonight, almost too easy. Delta Comair/ASA CRJ southbound, probably from Green Bay.

And this one, also taken tonight...not positive, but I'd put my money on a JetBlue Airbus westbound over my house! Only thing I can come up with that has a dark blue tail and white fuselage...

Saw a C-130 with a completely orange tail the other day. Wasn't a Coast Guard one though. Does anyone know of someone that operates a C-130 with an orange tail?
You probably saw one of the C-130's from Schenectady county... we see those guys do touch and goes alot all year round in Albany... probably cause were only like 10 or 12 miles From SCH..... Thier call sign is "Skier" and they are the ones that do the Antarctica run when somthings goin on down there... Just a guess at who you saw, but they've got orange tails....

Just to help ressurect a "dead" thread, here's a few "dotspotting" shots. :D
This one is easy... KC10 in the pattern for KORD..taken with my Minolta Z1 even.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/Pict1795-mod.jpg>
Actually, it is not a KC10. Note the winglets, the KC10s do not have those. Therefore it must be a MD11. As for the airline, World Airways would be my best guess since they have a fully white fuselage and tail.
And this one, also taken tonight...not positive, but I'd put my money on a JetBlue Airbus westbound over my house! Only thing I can come up with that has a dark blue tail and white fuselage...
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/Img_3779-mod.jpg>
The JetBlue planes have a blue belly. This one is missing that. It probably is a Air Canada A320 or more likely a A321.

World Airways MD11 have a world on the tail and world titles. So im 50/50 towards the world airways desigantion. Looks more like a cargo config as well, notice the lack of windows? As for a KC10 lol :P
As for the A320 looks more like Continental but i know they dont have them, not jb though :)

My bad ID on the KC10...you know the opposite wing does kind of look like the refueling boom...that's what I took it for. But now that you mention it, it hangs waaaay too low...
Got me on the JB Airbus too... :D Ah well.

I saw a U.S. Military flight in old (the previous, blue) United Airlines colors, having an identification of "Reach 842" on Aug 14, 2004. It was a civil Boeing B-747-400, flying at FL330! 8) It was really nice as I could observe it at late afternoon in very good wheather conditions. We have a lot of Reach overflights since the beginning of the war against Iraq.
Today (Aug 16, 2004) I saw the following ones:
TRA 4487 B-737, ERGOM-DEGET routing, 16:14h, FL350
a Monarch A-320 in nice new livery at 16:15h on the same routing
GFA 005 A-330, BKS-BNO routing, 16:30h, A-330 in old colors
LTU 1302 A-320, ERGOM-DEGET routing, 16:53h, FL330
PAC 421 (Polar Air Cargo) B-747, BUDOP-PATAK routing, 18:02h, FL340 with full blue tail, not blue engines
Good spotting.

depends which way the wind is blowing for arrivals/departues at DEN. besides that, i'd put money on DEN being the contrail capital of the U.S. it's not uncommon to see 10 active contrails at any one moment. i think the most 30K+ feet a/c i've spotted at the same time was 16. that's what happens when you live in the middle of the country.

This summer sucked for "dot spotting" I only saw a few days that wernt cloudy or hazy and even then the summer sky isnt all that friendly for it.... hopefully winter will be nicer.....

Way to many to count here. Where I live you get Aircraft headed to LAX and all the SoCal airports, plus planes from all over headed out to the Pacific. I often see DL's 764 ATL-HNL flight pass over. Its not uncommon here to see 4 or 5 contails all moving at once when you look up here, I counted 9 at sunset last saturday, too bad I was out of film.

It actually isn't that loud because the planes are so close to landing that they reduce the engine power. When I lived in NJ, my house was under the JFK flightpath for runways 13L/R. The planes were at about 3000 ft, and were much louder than the ones now at 500 ft.

Just got back from a quick trip to Bragg. During the drive I saw-
1 white high-winged prop aircraft, not sure of the type as it was pretty far away. It was flying low and making some pretty steep banks, however, so I would guess that it was connected to the military somehow.
2 US Army UH-60 Blackhawks
2 USAF A-10s in tight formation. The banked approximately 90 degrees to the right, made a quick turn and then I lost sight of them. Still pretty neat to see, however!
Even though Bragg is a bigger military base I still saw more interesting aircraft when I was up at GTB (Fort Drum, NY). Interesting visitors spotted up there included a Volga Dnepr Antonov (on numerous occasions), numerous C-5s and C-141s, Navy F/A-18s, USAF F-16s, Navy P-3 Orions, and even Air Force 1 and 2. Civilian aircraft spotted there included numerous L1011s, 757-200/300s, 767-300s, MD-11s, 717-200s, 737-700s, 737-200s, etc.
