Well this was our first trip to Minnesota in about 10 years so I really didn't know what to expect. Last time we went we drove. This time we flew. First time on Sun Country and first time to MSP. Enjoy.
DFW-MSP
SY502 N809SY
We made the 4 hour drive from Burnet to DFW on Thursday morning (6/30) to catch our 2:35pm flight to MSP. We got to the airport, turned the rental car in, and caught the bus to terminal E. That terminal is basically dead compared to last time I was there in 2000. We checked in and got through security and headed to gate E36. Boarding time came and I had seat 18F so I was pretty happy. As we pushed back about 15 minutes late, an AA 763 (N349AN) had just come off the bridge on A.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/1_DFW-MSP.jpg>
We started up and taxiied on B-G-WG to runway 18L which gave me a great view of terminal D and B, which was actually pretty busy.
The beautiful terminal D.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/2_DFW-MSP.jpg>
Busy terminal B where a cloud just moved over with America West's Arizona Cardinals plane, ATA 738, Shuttle by United 733/735 (can't really tell), LH A343 D-AIGA, BA 777, and an AA MD coming over the bridge. Just out of frame is a USExpress ERJ-170 and parked out of frame is a North American 763, N760NA.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/3_DFW-MSP.jpg>
Takeoff was pretty smooth. we stayed on the runway heading for a couple of minutes then made a huge right turn giving me a view of DFW through the clouds. Those clouds were there until we left Texas airspace where it cleared up for a bit.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/4_DFW-MSP.jpg>
Then the food was served. Hot turkey sandwich with a cookie and ginger ale for me. It was well above where other airline food is. I ended up having 2 sandwiches. There was then a storm over Kansas City so we got routed around that which gave me a great view of it. We were level with the tops at FL370.
[photoid=510995]
It then cleared up for the most part and then as we started our descent into MSP it started clouding up again.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/5_DFW-MSP.jpg>
Then I got my first view of St. Paul.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/6_DFW-MSP.jpg>
Then I got my first view of a NW DC-10.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/7_DFW-MSP.jpg>
The landing was pretty rough as the pilot struggled against a 30knot head/crosswind on 30L. We then taxiied to gate H4 at the Humphrey terminal and got our bags. Welcome to Minnesota, 72 degrees and a 30 knot wind from the northwest compared to the 102 degree DFW area with almost no breeze.
We then got a hotel for the night and then went to the Mall of America the next day. That place is friggin huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the only shot I got of the outside.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/8_MallofAmerica.jpg>
We then drove up to New York Mills to see my mom's family. They're Finnish so I guess that makes me part Finnish. Cool. Then we went to my mom's uncle's house on Big Pine Lake (I think) to spend the next few days with them. They have a beautiful view of the sunset on the lake.
This is my fav sunset shot from the lake.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/9_lake_sunset.jpg>
We went into New York Mills one day and just kind of wandered around and by chance found the pastor of the Lutheran church where my Grandma's memorial service was going to be held at. The service was held Sunday afternoon at 3. We then ate some good food. That church was actually started by my great-great-grandfather way back when he came over to the states.
We then started our own fireworks display on the 2nd and shot off a few. This is a one of the small bottle rockets exploding right after it took off. (4 sec exposure)
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/10_explodingbottlerocket.jpg>
We then had a roast of my aunt and my mom's cousin who were turning 50 the next day. Crazy Uncle Bill....
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/11_crazyunclebill.jpg>
Afterwards we went down to the Finn Creek Museum a couple miles down the road from my mom's cousin's house where I took this pic.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/12_flower.jpg>
That night we went to the fireworks show in Brainerd, MN. Some of my pics are in the fireworks thread which is somewhere in the OT forum.
The next couple of days we went exploring a little bit. On our last day there, I saw what I thought to be a 744 heading to ORD or somewhere. If anyone could help me out on that that would be great.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/13_unknownplane.jpg>
Then we made our way towards Grand Forks on the 7th and stopped at Itasca State Park where a huge fly landed on my shoulder and wouldn't fly away until I flicked it off.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/14_fly.jpg>
Mississippi River headwaters.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/15_msriverheadwaters.jpg>
We made it into Grand Forks and got a hotel near UND and spent the night there. The next day we toured UND and the UND portion of KGFK. It was pretty nice. We ate at Dagwood's in between the tours. As we were heading back to the car from the part of the tour at the airport, a FedEx 727 landed and I didn't see it until after it had passed the terminal. It was pretty cool. Sounded cool, too. Afterwards we started making our way back down to Minneapolis. We stopped a little less than halfway because it was already starting to get dark. We found a Best Western and stayed there then made our way toward Minneapolis the next day.
We then checked into our hotel just south of the airport and headed to the Mall of America for some shopping. I had my camera with me and decided to try something. This was the result. 4 second exposure with the camera on a rail. It's not easy holding steady that long.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/16_whirlything.jpg>
We then made our way back to the hotel to get some sleep because our flight was at 7am. We got up about 430-5am and finished getting ready. We left the hotel about 545 and I was kinda surprised because I had never seen the sun up so early. We drove to the Humphrey terminal and dropped the car off and got into the Sun Country morning rush, which is the mass of people on the left side.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/17_humphreyat615am.jpg>
It was about 613am when we got in line and luckily they let DFW and some other passengers form their own line in order to catch their flight. :clap: We made it through on time and got to gate H5 as they were boarding.
MSP-DFW

This time I was in 10F, which is surprisingly quiet even though it's right next to the engine. Oddly enough, at the gate next to us was N809SY, the plane we flew in on a few days before. Just about all the SY gates were occupied. 809 being pushed back.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/18_809pushback.jpg>
After everyone had boarded and everything was ready, we were pushed back and made our way to 12R. We took off and I got a view of how big the National Cemetery was there.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/19_mnnatcem.jpg>
A little ways into the flight they served breakfast which was a turkey-sausage and egg on a buscuit. It was pretty good. Again, I had two.
Orange juice, breakfast, my UND hat that I bought, and a bear I bought for someone at the MoA. She liked it.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/20_breakfast.jpg>
Well the flight was pretty uneventful, but the approach seemed a little weird to me. It was because we were coming pretty much straight in on 13R, something I had never done before. I didn't really realize until just before we landed. I got a good view of Texas Motor Speedway, though.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/21_texasmotorspeedway.jpg>
And Dragon Stadium, home of the South Lake Carroll Dragons, probably the best 5A football team in the state. Check out all the buses!
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/22_dragonstadium.jpg>
I did catch some reverser action...
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/23_reverser.jpg>
We did a high speed taxi onto A4-B(across the bridge)-gate E36 where customs was located. Our flight was going onto Cancun so that's why we had to go to E36. We were parked next to N292AS, a Champion Air 727 and got to see the people mover in action.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/24_n292as.jpg>
This is my last picture I took before my camera screwed up a few days later.
<IMG SRC=http://www.jetphotos.net/user-uploads/25_n292as.jpg>
Then we got our bags and caught the bus to the rental car place and got our car and drove back to Burnet.
Sun Country was very efficient in getting their passengers where they needed to go, as they did while we were catching our flight to DFW. Their food was awesome for airline food. :clap:
The horizontal pics are at 600x*** and the vertical pics are at 550x*** so that's why the jaggies are there. If you want to see more just contact me.
I'm selling some pics so if y'all want one contact me also.
On a sidenote, whenever I turn my camera on, it closes and says "lens error". What can be the factors that lead to that? It's a Nikon Coolpix 3200. Thanks.
