Hi all,
The new collaborative website between myself and noted rail photographer Chris Starnes is hereby officially announced.
RailPictures.Net (http://www.railpictures.net) is basically an exact image of this site, but with the focus instead on photos of trains and other railroad related subjects.
If you find trains fascinating, or just want to see what kind of great photos can be composed using rail equipment as a subject, please check us out!
And if you're a rail photographer, we'd love to see some of your photos in our database!

Peter,
At the moment, we're only accepting photos from North American railroads (Canada and U.S.) -- not because we're not interested, but because none of us has what we feel would be sufficient knowledge of trains in other places around the world to suitably configure the database to accept them.
Once the site gets a bit more stable on its feet, we'll be opening it up to trains from around the world. nod.gif

I just love those American freight trains. Still don't understand why the engines are not more powerfull....or do they just like having 4+ engines per train images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Great news Chris! When I was younger I was a big fan of trains, but that interest was soon eclipsed by aviation. Sadly, I don't know much at all about trains now. In my head is all 777s and such. Anyway, this is a good way to bring back my love of the rails. I hope to add some pictures to that site as well. Now I have plenty to do with my new camera...if only I could find time to get to ORD to contribute some photos for this site images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
Keep up the good work. Looks like we're on our way to eclipsing A.net!

Chris, do we need a separte log in for that site or do the same ones apply as here.
Also, how do photo upload tallies work? I mean, if I have 10 here and 10 on railphotos, do the stats include them both or are both sites kept as separate entities?
Sweet job Chris. Mirrodie clap.gif clap.gif clap.gif images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

You have to register separately for Chris's three sites -this one, the rail site and his original site at www.airdisaster.com (http://www.airdisaster.com)
I have and find them suberb, albeit the rail one is only just beginning to build up a head of steam.

I'd love to see a website like shipphotos.net with container-, oil-, RoRo-, Cruise- and other ships :-)

Love to see that, shipphotos, too Chris... but, the two guys we *know* can do that are too busy (understandably)

Not bad images/smiles/icon_smile.gif I like trains. My Father used to watch them when he was younger, but they've changed a lot in the UK. Not to mention that they're always late..

For new members that are photographers who also take train pictures I thought I bring this back from the dead. Unfortunately it doesn't acceopt photos from anywhere but the US and Canada but I'm sure Chris will add them soon. Trains are also easier to photograph as they are slower and more accessible. it's good for inexpirenced photographers to start out on trains and then move to airplanes.
Railway photography is popular in similar places as aviation photography, North America, Australia, East Asia and Western Europe there is particular interest in the UK and my experience of fellow users on JP and aslo A.net suggests that there is the interest there to make accepting non-american pictures worthwhile.
The problem is obvious-unlike with aviation each country has it's own numbering system so if I looked for 2303 (for example) I could end up with dozens of results from around the world. My interest in railways goes back nearly 30 years and I've been a professional railwayman for almost 10 years now-if someone wants to use my experience to widen the appeal of RailPictures then drop me an email. Perhaps it may be possible to do a trial expansion of RP.net by adding the UK to the database and seeing how it goes.
In the meantime here is some of my material-
http://www.contrails.co.uk
And if I had more time I would have more pictures here aswell!!
Matt
If you asked Chris I'm sure he'de welcome your expirence.

Nice stuff, indeed, but my heart is still at aviation. My dad used to be a great train buff and spent whole weekends to capture that odd steam engine still around in the sixties. I could not really understand until I spent whole weekends catching that odd prop still around in the seventies :D :D .
Anyway, I will not get distracted from the new site, but wish it well.
Regards,
Peter
