Bit ugly - not like a proper corvette, that one looks a bit silly changed into a saloon!

Jap Crap? (Well yes, that one is) A souped up Subaru will paste any chevrolet any day! No match for four wheel drive, the acceleration is awesome - its just not physically possible to get that much force acting between road and car in an equivalent 2 wheel drive.

SUV? (Sport Utility Vehicle...?) Is that yankee for a jeep style thing or a pick-up? Either way, pick-ups over here are only really for wanna-be texans and dodgy builders, and jeeps are crap for comfortable long distance driving and fuel economy. Worse for packing long gear like sails as well, you cant lie it down properly in something small enough to get insurance in! Sadly we have to pay for petrol over here, rather than 20cents a gallon or whatever you get! No wonder George is so desperate to go invade and get you all some more oil!

Do you not need to get insurance in the US? I dont think you've told us your age, but going on the photo of you in the photo thread and your posts i'd think maybe 16/17. In the UK you'd bankrupt yourself getting insurance on a 5.7 at 35, let alone under 20! Or can you only drive it with a parent on board or something images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif

Hmm, comes in at $2000 on an insurance quote, with you as a named driver and a parent as main owner, no accidents, benefit of doubt on all questions. Mad! Here it would be WELL over $15,000 and you're VERY unlikely to even be given a quote. I did have your address as Iowa though (random choice) i guess theres not alot to run into. It was more if i put you down as female though, the feminists will want to be onto that one! images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Guess the car fits into your rude-boy image - doesnt quite gell what with the whole cigar smoking, gold chains and then PlaneSpotting. You remind me of Ali G images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Aviation enthusiasts have the coolest cars!

1995 Isuzu Trooper 4X4 – soon to be a something else. I'm getting an Airstream that weights about 4,000 lbs (the Trooper's tow capacity is 5,000 but I don’t want to push it).

Any suggestions? I'm thinking Tahoe – but maybe – just maybe a Land Cruiser or Hummer H2.

Correct, but 4wd has everything to do with acceleration which is what will win pretty much any race. A Mustang turns corners better than any BMW or Mercedes...check out the slalom statistics. SVT has a bigger top speed and acceleration.

Actually the 2000 SVT has a speed of 71.2mph on a slalom run making it more manuevarble and faster than a M3, M5 or AMG. As i said 4WD wont help you much.

IMHO the Chevrolet Impala SS is one of the finest automobiles General Motors has ever produced. If I did not need 8,000 lbs towing capacity and off road capability, I’d definitely be driving one. It is a beautiful car, extremely comfortable and top notch handling/acceleration.

Acceleration is to do with force exerted on the road. 4 tires do this far better than 2. I can go through the maths if you want, i'm sure i could put it in terms you understand.

Peter for some reason I thought you were like 15.. images/smiles/icon_confused.gif

Mine is worth about $28,000.
I can get cars for dirt cheap, my brother in law and his dad own a car place and tow/repo and whenever they repo they charge storage fees which is $15.00 a day and alot of times it will sit for a year or more then they file for a title and sometimes get it for about $300.00 including all title fee's. Which is somewhat how I got the 4runner only I bought it from him for alot more then $300 since he could have easily made $25,000 off of it but I still got a hell of a deal!
I'm not going to sell it though I just also want a car.
Maybe an Impreza would be nice?

"I've been to chat to the automotive department here. According to the Cambridge University Engineering department, a BMW is much happier cornering than a Mustang. Got another argument?"

According to BMW Stats and Ford stats tested by Edmunds and R&T......let me see the Cambridge stats.

2000 SVT R

Performance
Acceleration
0-30 mph : 2.5 sec. Quarter Mile time : 13.4 sec.
0-60 mph : 5.3 sec. Quarter Mile speed : 108 mph
30-50 mph : 1.6 sec.
50-70 mph : 2.1 sec. Road Course Lap Time : 1:06.25

Handling
Lateral Grip (200ft skidpad) : .95g Slalom Speed (700ft slalom): 70.5 mph

2002 BMW M3

0-60 mph, sec 5.5/- 1/4 mile, sec 14.0@98.6/-
60-0 mph, ft 112/- 600 ft slalom, mph 67.0/-
Top Speed, mph 140/155

Funny isnt it?

"Did i EVER bring up BMWs!? Geez."

Just giving an example...because BMW is better than Subaru...so i doubt i even need to compare Subaru.

"Meet the Nissan Skyline - fastest car ever point to point on real roads according to every car magazine i can find that mention it. Its 4wd. Hmmmm"

On a track, 2wd is faster, but only if driven perfectly. The component of friction exerted by the steering wheels can be used fully for steering while the forward component of the rear wheels is used fully for acceleration. This means that at critical value of friction, a 2wd car corners faster and also means that the 4wd car (assuming engine size and weight are equal) will accelerate faster. However, conditions on real roads are not race-track perfect, and as such on real roads a 4wd car is faster point to point (I'm talking about roads with corners, hills and other driving features not long straight flat mid-american highways). In a straight line top speed wins, on real roads its a mix of acceleration and cornering cause you'll never be able to hit top speed anyway. And yes, point to point on real roads (ie driving a route from place A to B) the Nissan Skyline is fastest - It can beautifully handle the kind of roads that a supercar couldnt touch.

"I've been to chat to the automotive department here. According to the Cambridge University Engineering department, a BMW is much happier cornering than a Mustang. Got another argument?"

According to BMW Stats and Ford stats tested by Edmunds and R&T......let me see the Cambridge stats.

The sites i'm seeing quote 0-60 as 4.8, a bit faster than the SVT. Anyway, not got stats for BMWs, i'll ask them when i'm next in department, but the Jap Crap Toyota Supra pulls .98 Not bad...

"Did i EVER bring up BMWs!? Geez."

No BMW can touch a jazzed up impreza. Or even the Grey legacy imports from japan, the kind of car with 4 litre twin turbo. As its four wheel drive, its acceleration is untouchable!

"Meet the Nissan Skyline - fastest car ever point to point on real roads according to every car magazine i can find that mention it. Its 4wd. Hmmmm"

I've been to the US over 30 times. And thats the inmpression i have received, i have never seen fatter people. I'm talking theres a higher proportion of fat people than i see elsewhere and the fattest of them are fatter than elsewhere. Didnt realise i had to spell stuff like this out! Only an idiot would think i was talking about every citizen, i've seen plenty of very fit and shapely americans as well. And the sheep stories? You only have to shag them if you want to - i guess you're implying that were you to visit you wouldnt be able to resist the temptation images/smiles/icon_wink.gif I feel i can compare countries such as NZ, Poland and the USA because i have visited them all. Have you been to New Zealand? I'd be interested to hear about your visit.

Yes. I have.

Of course this whole argument is a little odd. A mustang is damn good at being an American Supercar, A legacy is great for capacity, towing and cost. I'm sure you can appreciate running cost and purchasing cost is important - it must have taken you ages to work and raise the money for your $25,000 car! (Or was that helped out with by mummy and daddy too...?) I have $16,000 worth of sail boat to consider so i'll spend the minimum on the car to get one that will do what i need! I'd rather spend the rest of the money on my Hobby. If your hobby is cars, like the SS, then thats what you spend your money on, fair play.

I'm not going to be on site for the next few days, moving down from college is generally a bit hectic! Have a good few days all.

And yes Dodge Vipers are nice smilewink.gif

"Mate, i MAKE the sheep jokes around Cambridge And i have to say i didnt remember seeing 40 odd percent overweight! (Not arguing with your figures at all, i have heard them myself a few times elsewhere as well) Maybe Sarasota is just healthier than average, heh. Dare say its got a lot of tourists, same for the Colorado mountains where i've spent a great deal of time. They're awesome!"

Try Milwaukee.. 45% of the population is either obese or everweight making it the fattest US city.

"And if you havent been to NZ, how do you know its 'even worse' than the UK? Sounds like a bit of a comparison!"

Well NZ to me is just to secluded...UK is nice and close to mainland Europe, nice airports like LGW, LHR, STN, MAN, BHX and such.

Its a funny clip. 8-) No, im not in advertising. Actually thought for a while back in 1984 when I saw the Apple "1984" commercial that was a play on Orwells book "1984". I thought, wow, thats a cool way to grab your attention. But alas, I became a computer geek, a tech head. Closest ive came to doing anything advertising is making some small bad spoofs using Final Cut Pro digital editing software. laff.gif

Now that I spent a pretty good amount of time as a unemployed geek after the great dot coms became the dot busts... I prolly should have went into advertising. shake.gif

Virus? Its a Celica - its the "Coyotemobile" laff.gif my plates say its a coyote anyway smilewink.gif

Been a good car. matter of fact, only complaint ive had out of it in the past 3.5 years, it was loosing power. But a tune up, oil change, new plugs brought it all back to life. One should not wait almost 4 years to do a service i guess, but its not given me any complaints besides acting a bit "slow out of the chute" this past few months.

And look at it this way, at least the Japanese can pronounce Celica... not like the Toyota "Cor roar rah"... laff.gif laff.gif

Mazada isn't foreign anymore their owned by Ford smilewink.gif

On a serious note, I really don't think there's a major difference anymore between imports and domestics. Take my friend for example she has a 2000 Acura CL and already had two trany's put in, I have a 1999 Pontiac and haven't had any trouble. There's good and bad on both sides, allot of times it comes down to how you maintain the car.

"Mercs, BMW's, Jags, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Toyota, Mazda etc are all crap ??"

Mr. Chapman I would like to point out a couple mistakes in your reasoning.

1. Jag, Aston, Lamborghini and Mazda (total crap) are all owned by US companies.

2. We are not talking about supercars. I think this post is regarding street cars, something up to a Viper or such. Not Diablos and Murcialegos and Corniches'

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just hate ricers, I dont think every non-american car is crap. But ill tell you that a 64' mustang kicks BMW/Mercedes/Mazda/Jag upside down and inside out. Kudos to our LGB resident for driving such a fine piece of machinery!

I drive a Ford Expedition with all the trimmings pluss a Ford Lynx Ghia on Wednesdays (colour coding).
So what have I learned after only owning and driving European cars previously? American "iron" is pure and utter crap! Then again I suppose these cars suits the American driving style. Me, I like driving.
Point in case are "tests" performed by American car mags.
0-60, 1/4 mile, skidpad and slalom, yep that make for some real life driving I would say. shake.gif
Ever wondered why hardly anyone else by American cars? Check your export figures and cry!
Per

PS
I've owned a number of ol' American cars, '55 to 64 Impalas, Dodge, Pontiac and a nice '58 Buick Super. Fun cars? Yes! Good cars? Nope.
Otherwise VWs (Jetta and Caravelle), Peugots (205, 305 405, 206), Fiat 127, Hillmans (Minx and Super Minx), Rover 600 Ti, Land Rover Discoveries, Citroen GS X3, Toyota Cressida, Opel Ascona and some forgotten.

HI!
I have a 911 Carrera 3.2 with the European high compression engine (came stock with 231 hp). With minor modifications the horsepower was increased a mighty 6(!)hp clap.gif to 237 hp in total. Torque was raised by about 10 foot-pounds as well. While it's not the world's most powerful car, it does accellerate not bad in the quarter mile: 13.80's at 102mph due to the fact that it only weighs 1160kg. Top speed was raised (according to the "Fahrzeugbrief", - an official document that accompanies each vehicle here in Germany) from 245 km/h to 253km/h (157mph) due in part to the lip-spoiler on the front.
But accelleration and top speed are not what make this old car fun to drive: it's the handling and braking power which make it phenomenal.

However, a part (a very small part) of me does miss the Mustang that I drove before. Must be the V-8 thing.

Ciao,

Chris
