Well folks, it's time to dust off the bag where you stored your winter boots because winter's knocking at the door.
It started to snow a couple of minutes ago here for the first time and well, it sucks shake.gif. This is rather strange because usually we'll get the first snow flakes around the end of november or even early december. Well maybe since it started early it will end early ...I wish images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

I can't wait! I literally live for snowstorms, which are a bit too infrequent down here for my tastes. nod.gif

Wanna trade places? images/smiles/icon_wink.gif hehe just kidding. Actually It's not the snow that I don't like but rather the cold air.

I agree with Chris on this one. Give me cold fall days with a little snow and I'll be happy. Nothing quite like a bit of snow on the ground and the fireplace heating up the living room. I could do without the hot days of summer.
images/smiles/icon_wink.gif
I'm the same way - living here in Atlanta (snow is rare), winter generally consists of cool, drizzly, overcast days where the temp is usually between 35º and 45ºF (1.7º and 7.2º C). This can last for weeks at a time.
I would rather have a bright, clear, sunny day at about 10º (-12º C) any time.
It's almost like the weather here can't decide to be warm or cold during winter. I'd rather just have one extreme or the other.

Then you wouldn't like it here: a "cold" January day is 65F/16C, and that's rare. What I like about winter is that I can usually sleep with the windows open, contrary to the other 8 months when it's too hot and those roaring crickets dwelling under my bedroom window are just so damn noisy I'd rather listen to the AC.

Ah, but you live amidst brand new Learjets, Cessnas, Challengers and CRJ's, it compensates for the moody weather. Would you rather live here among ratty 737's, battered Fairchilds, boring Dash 8's and gulls, zillions of gulls? Think about it.

You can get bizjets almost anywhere. If I wanted to see a test plane or something, I'd have to go to a plant, where I'd probably get chased off by security uhoh.gif
Bombardier keeps the skies around here interesting once in a while with their Q400 testing a while back and the CRJ -700, but nothing new lately. The big jets are a lot more interesting to me, the jetliners, but you don't get much of the big jets around here. The 737 fuselages get built here, but they get shipped to Seattle. The last time I saw anything large here was when I was at the airshow at McConnell AFB and I saw that 747 laser plane. It was awesome, however, I believe that's gone off to Seattle also. Our airport itself is pretty boring, we had a lot of mainline service downgraded to CRJs. Spotting isn't as great here as you'd think it is...at least it isn't to me.

It depends on what type of aircraft one is attracted to. I like small jets myself but I agree that the CRJ has become almost as common as the 737 (plenty around here as well) and isn't the attraction it was 20 years back when it was a new concept. However in Wichita you have what most cities don't: a flight testing facility for new designs from a large manufacturer that is bound to develop new models sooner or later, and you guys get to see them years before us. Even if the larger ones are built up in Montreal they are tested in Wichita first. Plus your local papers follow the industry because it's of local importance, just like they do in seattle (nothing new up there either). Too bad Bombardier decided not to go ahead buying Fairchild, they may have moved some of the production to Wichita. But they're bound to make other acquisitions in the future, if we are to believe rumors coming out of General Dynamics'HQ.

I just got back from Vermont the other day and it snowed twice there.. Very pretty up on the mountains, I will have to post some of the pictures..
Though the last day it snowed I had to get up early and leave, in the ice and snow.. uhoh.gif
Last year here in NC we got a little, mostly we have big problems with ice, the roads often turn into nothing but solid ice..
We got several inches last year and over a foot in 2 days a couple of years ago.. images/smiles/icon_smile.gif.............

I live across the Puget Sound directly west of Seattle. We luckily miss the copious rain that most of Seattle gets, as it seems to get deflected by the Olympic mtn. range further up the peninsula, but we still get our share for sure. I think around Everett is the wettest spot. Seems no matter when I am driving I-5 on my way to Bellingham, it can be dry and sunny every where else, but its either raining around Everett, or the roads are wet from a recent rain. laff.gif

Another Atlantan in the house here... I HATE winter in Atlanta. It's always cloudy, and on the rare occaison we get snow, it covers the roads in a thin layer. If I see winter with no snow, I'm likely to scream or something, so I always petition to someplace North for Christmas.
But yeah....cloudy, rainy, wet, damp area.... car windows are frozen, and it's frozen just a bit thicker than the point where you can crack the ice off....grrr

After a terribly painful winter last year, I'm not really looking forward to winter here again..But then again it's the same story in Erie every year....6 inches of snowfall a day is normal here! But I just hope it's not subzero like it was last year. It was so cold, it became hard to breathe and you just had to stay inside. I couldn't even go skiing! :(
Hope this year will be better, but honestly it doesn't look like it.

Lol, we have some real morons here that like to dress in shorts and t-shirts in the middle of January when the temps are in the -20s to -30s...I cannot believe those people! Watertown was on ABC a few times last winter as being the coldest place in the lower 48; we also have the honor of being one of the snowiest cities east of the rockies...here is an example taken from our NWS site last winter-

Well I go to school at the University of Pittsburgh, so I live right in the city. I go to PIT a lot do so some spotting. I love PIT, it truly is one of the world's best airports. It's a very underated airport and has truly been given a bad rep with the recent US Airways news! But still its one of my hometown airports, infact the airport I fly out of the most. Atlanta in the Winter can be strange indeed. You can go from being around 50F one day, and be below freezing the next. The worst snowstorm we had was in late winter (March 1993), and up until 2 days prior, it was in the 60s for highs, and we were all wear short sleeve shirts. Winter has a way of reminding us that the calender may say Spring, but I'll make a return visit. I remember about 20 years ago we had 3 inches of snow in mid April!. Another example, the high for May 2, 1994 was like 45F (It was in the 70s the day before, and the temp dropped like a rock that night. I was out with some friends and was wearing shorts, and by the end of the night was freezing.). When we get snow here, even if it's a light dusting, everything practically comes to a standstill. Half an inch of snow will cancel school. It's pretty funny to me now when that happens, but back when I was a student, I always wished for snow.

Quitcherbitchen. You get no sympathy from me. I used to not mind winter so much until I came here. Here in ND, if it gets above zero from about december until march, I'm pretty freakin happy, if it gets above freezing, I'm extatic. Preflight is the worst, trying to drain fuel out of the plane when you're shivering like mad. And we have to put a blanket over the engine too when we're done flying to keep it warm. On the upside, we get some incredible performance on takeoff and climb, already we're getting climbs well over 1,000fpm, not too bad for a warrior. But once again...no sympathy from me.

Maurice,
No currently US Airways Express has no reason to replace the B1900D since it is the only current model that is small enough (19 seats) to operate profitably from small airports in this area! Plus some airports such as ART and FKL have small runways (only 5000 ft), so some RJs are not viable.
