I just received this video anonymously from an AirDisaster.Com contributor, and I thought I'd share it with you guys.
I've seen some pretty amazing footage of aircraft landings almost-gone-wrong from the old days at Kai Tak, but I can honestly say that this is the most amazing piece of aviation video I've ever seen.
The video is 37 seconds, and about 2.2mb in download, and shows a TAP Airbus A321 attempting to land in Lisbon on 27 December 2002 in some MAJOR crosswinds.

And why is that ??? Excellent pilot skills, I would say, from both crews. Pretty reassuring for me as a simple pax. Give me those crews anytime.
That video link you´ve just posted: Where was it shot ? Funchal ???
Greetings !

Yikes!
SST2707: In that clip you posted, is that the same plane aborting twice in a row? The poor passengers! I wonder how it looked on the third try...
Thanks.

PO,
Thats cause SST2707 doesnt like Portugues pilots. skeptical.gif But I am with you on this one, seems like some good skills, especially in the Lisbon case.
And Chris is right the second video is Funchal.

Hehe, at least there´s a God who sometimes does a wonder: We agreed ! images/smiles/icon_wink.gif laff.gif
I remember Funchal pretty well, although under better weather conditions (a rare case). A tricky approach between mountains. Wasn´t there a 727 which crashed into the mountains in the 70´s ?
Abraços !

Yep,
That definitely looks like runway 24 at Funchal.

Those pilots are not doing a good job, they are stupid for not aborting the landing at least 20 seconds earlier.

Did you ever consider that they were fighting the wind for control of the aircraft? You cant really abort if you dont have the aircraft under control now can you? You really dont think that they were attempting to land all the way down the runway do you? Considering some of the engine strikes and overruns at Kai Tak I would say this pilots did a great job getting the aircraft under control. TAP has a great safety record, they have only lost one aircraft since 1954.

I've seen a few scary landings in crosswind/gusty conditions, never seen one as wild as that.
Winds gusting to 110 kilometres an hour here this afternoon, should wander out to the airport with a vid cam. images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Its not that I don't like Portuguse pilots. Hell I'm portuguse my self. I know TAP has some of the best, but I had the oppurtunity to get to know them one summer. They, at least the ones who flew widebodies or the older ones, tend to have BIG egos and egos and cockpits don't mix.

Here is my two cent's worth as a pilot...
..it looks hairy to passengers or perhaps non-pilots.
But the go-around is definately timely and smart.
As for the X-winds...that's nature, there is nothing you can do about it. Sure the crew might have chosen to shoot the approach at the alternate but then there would have been pax complaining.
Looks to me whover was flying the plane did a good job.

You know this episode somehow caught the TV attention. It seems that the crew made two landing attempts (failed) and then, they headed back to Faro´s airport (south of Portugal) to land safely.

Wicked!!!
My goodness, must hand it to the pilots, it takes serious skill to handle a plane no matter what size in such adverse weather.
