View Full Version : Convair Airliner in "Goldfinger"

Here's an offbeat question:

In the James Bond classic film "Goldfinger" (1963?) there is a scene near the beginning in which the villian Goldfinger leaves England for Geneva by loading his car into the nose of a large four-(piston)-engined airliner with a hump at the front (like a miniature 747) and a nose loading door. james ends up having to load his Aston Martin into the "next flight" to continue the chase in the Alps.

I think I remember seeing the name "Convair" on the side of the aircraft in the film, but I have looked through my books on old airliners and haven't found anything that looks like this plane. Does anyone know what it was? Does anyone care but me?

Thanks in advance!

It was Carvair, not Convair. images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Hey Carvair! Converted DC4s! I had no idea. That's great. Thanks for the info and the link to that nice site on the subject! images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

The AN-124 isn't too bad in the new Bond flick either... images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Are you sure it wasn't a Bristol 170? It had two radials, make not remembered and I think operated by British Airferries.

On second thoughts I may be confusing the Goldfinger movie with that of The Italian Job with Michael Cain.

Definitely an ATL Carvair, while Mr Bond is advised by ramp agent while waiting behing the wheel of the famed Aston Martin DB5 that next flight is in half an our, the aircarft is shown in the background leaving the apron area showing off a tri-gear goer coming along the distinctive hump and the enhanced tail unit, in fact a DC.7C one.
